“Diagonally!” My trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter pt2 Diagon Alley

In my last HGWT blog post I started telling you about my trip with my wife Nicki to Orlando, FL and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Our first Harry Potter experience at Universal Studios was the “Escape From Gringotts” ride in Diagon Alley.

photo 3

This time around I wanted to go into more about what else we experienced in that section of the park- especially the shopping and storefronts.

DSC_7850  photo 1 (2)

I had two favorite shops in Diagon Alley– Ollivander’s Wand Shop and Fred and George Weasley’s shop Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. The attention to detail on both was incredible. If you wanted a specific character’s wand, or a product seen in the Harry Potter movies they seemed to have it!

photo 4 (4)  photo 2 (8)

There were a few wand shops and kiosks around the park, but we decided to shop for our wands at the main Ollivander’s shop in Diagon Alley– and I’m glad we did. The shop was a bit tight and could get crowded at times while we shopped, but when we got to Hogsmeade later there was a line to get into the Ollivander’s next to the Owl Post there! At least we could just walk right in at this location.

photo 5 (2)

Even though it was a small shop, the selection of wands was a bit overwhelming. They say “the Wand chooses the Wizard“, but here you can pick your own. We could have ordered some when we got back home, but it was nice and really cool to see them in person and buy them from Ollivander’s. We spent a good time looking through the stacks of boxes on multiple shelves and probably could have used some help from a wand.

photo 4 (1)

Luckily there were a few displays on the walls and helpful store employees to help with selecting the perfect magic wand. Some of the detail on the wands were not only breathtaking, but really fit the characters they belonged to- especially Slughorn’s! Some characters also had more than one wand to choose from.

photo 3 (1)  photo 5 (1)

If you needed additional help you could walk next door and down a long hallway flanked with wand boxes to attend a wand choosing ceremony in the back of the wand shop.

photo 1 (3)

We attended the “Ollivander’s Interactive Experience” twice that week- once we just watched someone else choose their wand with the help of this Ollivander’s wand expert. The next time Nicki and I both were chosen to participate (could have had something to do with the birthday/anniversary buttons we were wearing). We got to make bells ring, flowers wilt, and lightning/thunder crack. It was actually a lot of fun and glad we were chosen to be a part of the entertainment.

photo 1 (4)

You could choose between regular wands and interactive wands (I’ll go into more detail on them in my next post). We ended up with one of each for the both of us! The regular ones we chose were a Ginny Weasley wand for Nicki, and a Rufus Scrimgeour one for me. The interactive wands that chose us were a George Weasley wand, and a Dolores Umbridge wand. Luckily all four of them survived the flight back to our home safely.

Next to the entrance to Diagon Alley is a bright orange building that is the home to Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. It’s a joke and novelty shop founded by twins Fred and George Weasley.

I loved the mechanical Umbridge riding a unicycle from one side of the shop to the other, and the shop was filled from floor to ceiling with “magical” products like U-NO-POO, Chocolate Frogs, Extendable Ears, Pygmy Puffs...

photo 2 (2)

..as well as tees, pins, buttons, and Muggle Magic Tricks. Nicki got some chocolate frogs (each came with a Salazar Slytherin lenticular trading card). I picked up some buttons, pins, and juggling balls. Yep, I juggle- just not professionally.

photo 2 (6)

One of the staff was performing magic tricks at the counter for fellow employees and shop customers. We also witnessed someone adopting one of the Pygmy Puffs.

DSC_1599sm

I just wish the shop was a wee bit bigger, or at least the upstairs was open. I know London shops are supposed to be a bit cramped sometimes, but I wanted to explore more!

DSC_1251sm

I did have a lot of fun shopping there, and enjoyed visiting the Quidditch shop next door, too. It was connected and you could walk from one to the other without having to go back outside.

DSC_7887sm  DSC_1259sm

I really liked the house scarves and Quidditch equipment. There was an awesome moving team photo on one wall near the entrance which featured a player on a broom buzzing the team. Pretty funny. There was a photography shop on the other side of the Weasley’s shop, but I didn’t go in there.

DSC_1761sm

One of the other shops I had a lot of fun in was The Magical Menagerie pet shop. There were plush magical animals for sale, and a few “live” animatronic ones on display. This is where we got our “Celebrating” buttons from the store clerk.
DSC_8052  photo (62)
Nicki made a friend while we were shopping there, and I finally got to see what a Chinese Fireball dragon looks like!

photo 3 (2)

One of the prettier shops (and one I wish I could have spent more time in) was Wiseacre’s Wizarding Equipment. I really loved the brass looking telescopes and other equipment. They had some items I wish I had remembered to go back for on our last day there, but got in a hurry and only got a Hogwarts Express toy train. Definitely will shop there again.

DSC_7927sm

You’ve heard of not wanting to meet someone in a dark alley– well, we took our chances and went shopping in one when we ventured into Knockturn Alley. Lots to see- well, as best as someone could in a dark alley!

DSC_7931  DSC_7960

A lot of creepy items on display, and some not so creepy for sale at Borgin and Burkes. Lots of Sirius Black, Bellatrix Lestrange, and other Prisoner of Azkaban tees, photo frams, and other merch.
DSC_7946  DSC_7950
Nicki and I dug the stuffed Aragog/Acromantula, and of course there was a vanishing cabinet!

photo 2 (9)  photo 2 (10)

Speaking of vanishing- this is where I’m going to disappear until my next blog post when I let you in on some of the food and entertainment we experienced in Diagon Alley!

“You’re a tourist, Harry!” My trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter pt.1 Gringotts

Last month my wife Nicki and I flew to Hogwarts and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

DSC_1742

We didn’t go by broomsticks, Hogwarts Express, or even flying motorcycle- we took a muggle flight from Memphis to Orlanado, FL. Nicki was able to find some affordable flights out of Memphis for us (which is hard to do these days), and a good deal on an on-site hotel. We got an extra bonus day at the parks, too.

image (9)

It was the first vacation we’ve taken together since our honeymoon to New Orleans three years ago, and the first time I’d been back to Florida since I went with my HauntedWeb.com buddies to visit Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights and Busch Gardens’ Howl-O-Scream over 1o years ago. This time it was not only the 3rd wedding anniversary for Nicki and me, but it was also the week of my birthday. I got a lot of Hufflepuff love during our visit. I think half the staff there were Hufflepuffs.

“You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true,
And unafraid of toil
“
—The Sorting Hat

DSC_7799  DSC_8092

We were able to get into the Universal Studios part of the park an hour early (thanks to our room keys) so we headed straight to London– or Florida’s version of London. Best I remember from my last two visits, this was the JAWS ride area, and the big shark still hangs around the corner on a dock just before you reach London. Oh, and be sure to step inside the phone booth to hear a message from the Ministry of Magic.

DSC_8061

We entered through a secret entrance between King’s Cross Station and 12 Grimmauld Place and found Diagon Alley!

DSC_7804sm

The entrance was next to the Leaky Cauldron, and we spotted Fred and George Weasley’s shop Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes just as we entered the wizarding shopping district (more about both of those locations next blog post). The bricks didn’t move, but you could hear the sound of it as we walked through the brick archway. Nice touch. I was really geeking out at this point, but have to say my wife was geeking out even more!

nicki_library

For her, this was like an Elvis fan going to Graceland for the first time. She’s a huge Harry Potter fan- movies and books, and has had a portion of her collection on display at our local public library. We’ve been waiting for them to open both Harry Potter parts of the park, and connect them with the Hogwarts Express.

DSC_7823

We wanted to get to ride Escape From Gringotts first. It’s a 3D (or should I say “4D”?) motion ride inside Gringotts Wizarding Bank in the center of Diagon Alley, and one of the newest rides at the park.

DSC_7814 DSC_7817

Atop Gringotts sits a huge dragon! Outside ofthe bank on the left is Hagrid’s flying motorcyle/sidecar, and on the right before you enter the bank stands a grand statue of Gringott himself (the goblin who founded the goblin run bank back in 1474) on top of a pile of gold coins. Before getting into the queue line for the ride, we were instructed to put larger valuables in a locker which were just outside the bank behind the statue. After all, like Hagrid says- “Gringotts is the safest place in the wizarding world.”
photo (56)  image (12)

After storing Nicki’s good camera in one of the lockers we hopped in the queue line, which was moving along pretty quickly. There were things to check out like the goblin rail carts that are used to travel though the underground passageways to reach the vaults below Gringotts. The weather was nice change from the Memphis area that week.

image (13)  gringotts_banner

Once inside Gringotts it was like we had stepped into the Harry Potter movie world! There was a huge chandelier, and rows of goblin teller windows on each side with goblins working away on ledgers.

image (14)  staircase

At the head of all the tellers was the chief bank teller who spoke to us visitors as we walked past his desk towards the next part of the queue line inside the bank.

image (15)

We passed a spiral staircase, a vault, and several desks with newspapers that had moving photos just like in the movie.

photo (61)

It was a very clever effect! Saw some video, lenticular, invisible wire, and pepper ghost effects throughout the wizarding world. It may not be actual magic, but many times it made us think, “How did they do THAT?!!”

image (16)   photo (58)

There were also painted goblin portraits, goblin armor, and moving shadows and familiar voices behind closed doors. The shadow effect was used nicely on the Hogwarts Express.

hp-1sm

While we waited in line we had a photographer take our photo, which was available for purchase as we exited the ride. After having our photo taken, we were informed over a loudspeaker that there would be a delay (the ride had broken down). It wasn’t too long of a wait, and we did get to talk to some other folks waiting in line- some from overseas. The ride was a blast. It’s a lot like the 3D Spiderman ride in Islands of Adventure, but after a simulated elevator ride you’re riding along on a magic cart underneath Gringotts.

image (17)

You meet a goblin named Blordak, and then Bill Weasley greets and escorts you as Voldermort and Bellatrix chase after you during the ride, and you encounter security trolls and the half-blind white fire-breathing dragon who guards Gringotts. The attention to detail throughout the park is amazing, and this ride had plenty of its own from front of the queue line, to the bank lobby, throughout the ride, the gift shop as you exit, and especially outside the building…or to be more exact what was “on top of the building”!

DSC_7923

Yep- the dragon perched on top of the building. It’s actually a fire-breathing dragon! It growls and spits fire about every 15-20 minutes or so, and is incredibly impressive- and hot!

DSC_7833 DSC_7861

I could feel the heat all the way at the other end of Diagon Alley! Of all the things we experienced that week, I have to say this was probably my favorite. Anytime I heard the dragon begin to growl I had to try and catch a glimpse. It was great to watch the reactions of folks who were seeing it for the first time.

DSC_7918

Just up the street from Gringotts Bank is the Gringotts Money Exchange where you can exchange muggle money for wizarding currency.

DSC_7912

Another animatronic goblin teller sits behind the counter and interacts with customers.

money1 money2

Nicki exchanged a few bucks while we were there- $10 to be exact.

DSC_7891

We actually exchanged quite a few bucks while we shopped in Diagon Alley- wands, chocolate frogs, butter beer and more, but that will have to wait until my next post.I’ll also post about our trip to Hogsmeade on the Hogwarts Express, our visit to Hogwarts Castle, dining choices at the park, and some of the great entertainment we experienced in Diagon Alley and Hogsmead.

Postus-laterus!

Back in time- a quick look back at my St. Louis trip

After the St. Louis Rams’ 52-0 win over the Oakland Raiders yesterday, I got to thinking- I never did a blog post on my trip to St. Louis, MO to watch the Rams VS Titans last year! Yeah, been a slacker about updates lately…

1395828_10202387877642195_2006147596_n  943728_10202391841261283_313519346_n

To celebrate my birthday and our wedding anniversary (they are just a few days apart), my wife and I took a short vacation/long weekend trip up to St. Louis. I’d never seen an NFL game in person before, and both of our favorite teams were playing each other. Yep, it’s a house divided- I’m a St. Louis Rams fan and my wife is Tennessee Titans fan. She told me when we started dating that she would tolerate me being a Rams and NY Yankees fan, but if I wasn’t a Nashville Predators fan the deal was off! We get up there for a Preds game at least once or twice a season.

It was pretty much a straight shot up I-55 to St. Louis for us, and I had gorgeous birthday weather that Saturday. Great road trip. We stopped at Boomland! and a rest area in Missouri for a couple of pit stops, but pretty much did the morning trek up through Memphis, Arkansas, and Missouri non-stop.

1453523_10202381002310316_474780708_n  935115_10202373597400500_1581468639_n

We made pretty good time, and seeing the arch for the first time was quite impressive.

Actually, it was pretty impressive each time we saw it over the weekend. Really an incredible structure.

Once in town we stopped and explored the area by the arch and riverfront. Saw a helicopter tour rides business, the arch, and walked around the park there enjoying the beautiful (but a bit windy) weather.

601778_10202390486427413_901611352_n

We walked across the street for lunch at  Tigin Irish Pub & Restaurant.

The fish and chips, shepherd’s pie, and pulled lamb French dip were all excellent.

We ended up eating there a couple more times while in St. Louis- it became our favorite hangout. After lunch we checked into the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark which wasn’t too far up from the arch.

Actually, our hotel was across the street from Busch Stadium where the St. Louis Cardinals play.

We had some great views of downtown St. Louis (especially the fog Sunday morning), and enjoyed exploring the area.

1381444_10202373598840536_1254866374_n  1395184_10202373604760684_734786758_n

Got to walk around Busch Stadium, and see Scottrade Center where the St. Louis Blues play hockey, too.

534355_10202373480677582_971905368_n 1392077_10202373604800685_1498992585_n

Spidey-sense started to tingle as it got later (we both grew up in Memphis) so we headed back to the hotel.

1382990_10202373604920688_1796986684_n

Back at the hotel bar/restaurant, I didn’t get traditional birthday cake and ice cream for my birthday…

1458546_10202383338288714_1857939305_n  1422549_10202373605640706_2022301968_n

…but something even better! We had walked around downtown a lot that night so it was nice just to sit and enjoy dessert and some time together. Those were the two things I really liked- being able to walk to things and spending time with my sports fanatic wife.

1422416_10202389703167832_1420265394_n   996660_10202391854741620_1990934591_n

Speaking of walking around St. Louis with my sports fan wife- we were there to see a football game at the Edward Jones Dome, and we got a close one that Sunday- 28-21.

1391501_10202373167789760_1506729570_n  1457756_10202373245671707_438416763_n

I normally am hoping for a Rams victory, but since my wife is a Titans fan (and it’s a long way back home!) I was okay with Tennessee winning that game, and apparently a lot of other Titans fans made the game and were happy, too. 😉

579264_10202373149389300_832956966_n  537306_10202389958054204_897562405_n

I’ve been a Rams fan since I was a kid, and had a cousin play for them back then. Was cool to see his name and number inside the stadium.

167627_1763434489579_5050822_n  1450108_10202382046776427_1541133992_n

It hasn’t always been easy being a Rams fan, but they’ve always been my team, all the way back to the early ’70s Los Angeles Rams days. (We do not speak of the Rams 23–16 victory over the Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV and the around our house..!)
1425625_10202391552694069_1206164592_n   1458471_10202391279927250_1675868988_n

I was able to pick up a lot of cool St Louis Rams swag before the game at the tailgate party across from the stadium or inside the stadium- which is hard to do where we live. Cool thing- some was even free! I got a free hat, photos, bag shades, and car flag.

1458709_10202373219551054_1673644397_n  603976_10202373225071192_1691091800_n

The tailgate party was great- I’ve never been surrounded by THAT many Rams fans. Some joked about me being with a Titans fan, but everybody was cool with it.

1391925_10202373290712833_1039244629_n   1424561_10202373290672832_1099964634_n

We even ran into an old fraternity brother of Merlin’s- he was wearing an old school Los Angeles Rams OLSEN/74 replica jersey!

1385956_10202382387424943_1780801029_n  1378345_10202382357704200_1541100767_n
We visited the arch a few times over the weekend, and went down below it and checked out the museum and gift shop in the base of the arch. Really liked the museum, and we picked up a few items in the gift shop, but passed on going up in the arch. I’ve been claustrophobic since I was a kid and after seeing the inclinator car you have to ride up in (looks like climbing into a dryer!) I decided against it. Maybe someday…but with the wind as strong as it was I’m glad we didn’t! On the weekend the lines were pretty long, too. Again, maybe someday if I’m up during the week and the crowds (and wind) are light.

Boeing Store  971286_10202396231011024_1797126713_n

On our way out of town Monday we stopped by the Boeing Store (my wife works for a Boeing company) to do some shopping, and then hit Collinsville, IL– home of the world’s largest catsup bottle! I really want to check out their Annual Brooks® World’s Largest Catsup Bottle® Festival Birthday Party & Car Show one summer.

1395146_10202398311663039_222924187_n    1393246_10202401704987870_768940345_n

When we got to the other end of the state an hour or two later we also stopped by Metropolis, IL- the home of Superman…

1461022_10202398090937521_994208469_n

and a TARDIS! (See more about the Metropolis TARDIS here.) I was a bit cold and wet while in Metropolis, but we got to see some friends while in town. I’m usually in town each June for the annual Superman Celebration.

1426388_10202400454196601_72886881_n

On the way home and not too far from Metropolis (about an hour away) we stopped at Lambert’s Cafe (Home of the Throwed Rolls) in Sikeston, MO for my birthday dinner. I had roast beef, corn, baby carrots, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet tea, rolls, and a few pass-arounds (they bring different dishes to your table to try). Since it was Monday we lucked out and didn’t have a wait to get in- it can be “fortyfiveminutstahanhour” or more on the weekends.
5statesin3days
We traveled through 5 states in 3 days- and had a blast. I honestly lost count on how many times we crossed the Mississippi River, though!

Hope to catch a Titans game in Nashville with Nicki someday.

Hockey Holidays- Our Christmas Trip To Smashville

Dec29

Last weekend Nicki and I traveled back to Nashville, TN for another Nashville Predators hockey game.

preds_montreal122113

This trip was the second half of my anniversary present to Nicki, and a chance for us both to wear our new gold Preds jerseys. She wore her #6 captain Shea Weber one I bought for her, and I wore the #35 Pekka Rinne one Nicki bought for me on our last trip. (Thanks to the Preds, Delta Dental, and Schenk Photography for the free photo above.)

photo (47)

We headed up on Saturday morning. It was a bit warm for late December. In fact, Nashville tied a record high that day of 73 degrees. We didn’t have any real rain on the way up, but the wind was pretty strong- a preview of what would come later.

photo (48)

We had some time to kill before checking into our hotel and decided to do some last minute Christmas shopping. We weren’t brave enough to fight the possible crowds at Opry Mills Mall AKA “Shopryland“, so we went to the CoolSprings Galleria Mall in Franklin, TN– just outside of Nashville. We found a lot of cool Batman merch at Hot Toipic. Sadly this hat was too small for Nicki and too big for our cat Harley Quinn.

After the mall, we decided to stop by the Cool Springs Sport Seasons. I picked up a new Colorado Avalanche jersey that was on sale. Saw a few others I may have to pick up on our next trip…

After checking into our hotel we headed back towards downtown Nashville to have dinner before the game. We hit one of our favorite places- Noshville. It’s a deli in the Vandy area, just a few minutes away from the Bridgestone Arena where the Preds play.

1472976_10202801339618486_819514755_n

It was very quiet- unusual for Noshville. We sat right down and placed our orders. I got the Nosh Dip and Nicki got the Hot Ham & Cheese. We also got a bowl of their pickles- always good. Good news/bad news- Nicki’s sandwich was comped because of a mix-up in the kitchen. The bad news it made us run a bit later than we had planned. Nicki likes to get there early to take pics of the players practicing.

DSC_5959

Also, we were in a bit of a hurry since there was a 6pm puck drop instead of the usual 7pm one because of the game against the Canadiens was being televised for Hockey Night In Canada.

DSC_6164

The weather was kinda wet before the game so there was no pre-game activities out on the plaza. We did get there in time for Nicki to take some shots before the game and do some shopping. I got a Pekka bobblehead, a Christmas puck, and a Preds stocking ornament- and I got Nicki a signed mini hockey stick from the Nashville Predators Foundation booth.

DSC_6463

It was a good game, although this was the second game we’ve been to in a row where a Pred left the game after taking a shot to the head- last time Shea Weber, this time rookie Seth Jones. Both are okay now and back on the ice.

DSC_6443

The Canadiens took an early lead but the Preds came back to tie it up and send it into overtime. Unfortunately the Habs scored first in OT. Final score Montreal 4 – Nashville 3.

DSC_6541

Just as the game ended and we were about to head out Nicki’s phone let us know that a tornado warning had been issued for our area. Sure enough, about that time we could hear the tornado sirens!

DSC_6563

We headed downstairs and tried to avoid the glass front of the building. Most folks were gathered near the pro shop and Fox Sports Tennessee Zone. This is where the live commentary shots are done during the Predators home games, and we did get to see Terry Crisp as he was leaving.

DSC_6566

All the monitors were turned to the local news and weather as the sirens continued to sound outside. Living in the south for most of my life I’ve kinda gotten used to tornado warnings. We get them quite often, and kind of expect them when the temps are predicted to flip flop.

DSC_6576

Nicki had gotten in touch with her family and the storms had blown through home, but no real damage to our neighborhoods.  As we were watching the radar on TV we could see we were right in the path of the storms. Kinda scary since a tornado hit downtown Nashville a few years back. After about an hour the sirens halted and the all clear was announced. We were lucky enough to make it back to the car before the rain started up again. It started pouring again once we hit the interstate, but we made it back to the hotel fairly dry.

photo (43)

The next morning we headed out to do some last minute Christmas shopping. The temp had definitely dropped overnight. At Target this “Escape Pod” car cracked me up.

photo (44)

After hitting the Target and getting our last bit of stocking stuffers, we headed across town for lunch at McNamara’s Irish Pub & Restaurant.

1525462_10202806112457804_820125437_n

I got my usual Sheppards Pie and a side of cabbage. Nicki got the Bangers and Mash with Black and Tan Onion Rings. As usual it was all delicious!

photo (42)

After lunch we stopped by Rick’s Comic City which is just up the street from McNamara’s. Ended up buying a few more Christmas presents for each other there, too. It’s kind of a running joke when we end up shopping together, “You didn’t see this.” The funny thing is a lot of times we do forget we saw each other buy them. I got a Black Widow bust, a Batgirl Super Best Friends Forever box, a Bombshell Wonder Woman magnet, and some buttons for Nicki. She got a Bombshell Harley Quinn statue for me.

The trip back home was a bit windy and rainy, but in spite of all the bad weather we did have a great trip.

Hope you all had a Merry Christmas, and have a Hockey New Year!

Hockey Thursday and Fanboy Friday- my Thanksgiving Black Friday trip to Nashville

Nov30

Posted In: Blog

This Thanksgiving my wife Nicki and I to do a road trip up to SMASHVILLE to watch the Nashville Predators take on the Edmonton Oilers.

DSC_5738

It’s been a few years since I caught a Thanksgiving hockey game. The first one was at a Riverkings game back when they still played at the Mid-South Colosseum in Memphis back in the mid/late ’90s. That game I got to meet “Les Nessman”/Richard Sanders during their Thanksgiving Turkey Drop.

DSC_5138

No turkeys were dropped this time, but the teperature sure did! We stood around outside for a bit and listened to the marching band (who played the Batman theme from the ’60s TV show) and the live band who later played inside during intermission. We did a bit of shopping at the outdoor kiosk and got a good deal on some Preds tees- $5.00 each, even on my XXL one.

DSC_5148

Once the doors opened to the arena we hurried inside. We were dressed in layers but it was nice to be indoors. Did a bit more shopping at another kiosk by the escalators. Picked up a Santa hat for Nicki, a Thanksgiving game puck, and a couple stocking stuffers for Christmas. That’s Nicki in her new player jersey (an anniversary present) with her new hat and favorite player- #6 Shea Weber.

Delta Dental was sponsoring free fan photos before the game so Nicki and I had our pic taken. We each got a 4″x6″ souvenir photo to take home. We’ve gotten a few at other games, too. They’ve got a great green screen set up and are very quick. We had our photo taken and in our hands in just a minute or so. Thanks to the Preds, Delta Dental, and Schenk Photography for our Thanksgiving treat.

DSC_5155

We walked around the concourse some more and found another kiosk that had a GNASH Christmas ornament and some Preds guitar picks. We then made our way to the Nashville Predators Foundation booth. Lots of autographed items were in their silent auction.

DSC_5156

They also had several wrapped “mystery pucks” signed by Preds players for $25.00 each. Nicki picked up autographed #7 Matt Cullen and #57 Gabriel Bourque pucks- two players she didn’t have. She also bought a Preds 2014 calendar. There was a special 50% off sale starting at the 2nd intermission but we passed on it. We already had a bag full of Preds goodies to take home with us, and the line after the game was still reeeeaaaaalllllly long. I’m sure we’ll do more shopping in the pro-store the next trip.

DSC_5154

Before the game started we decide to have Thanksgiving dinner. Nicki and I each had a chicken and waffle sandwich– just like the pilgrims!

532190_10202626127958304_931933830_n

I’ve never had chicken and waffles before, but now that I have I plan to again. Wish Gus’s Fried Chicken served them here in Memphis and Southaven. Good spicy chicken with some sweet maple syrup and warm waffles…oh, yeah! Maybe they have it on the menu at the new Gus’s in Southaven…

1424265_10151749925500060_2086271405_n

Oh, speaking of Southaven, we ran into one of my old high school buddies- Jay Barnes. He was on duty as an EMT at that night’s game and got to bring some of his family along. Good to catch up with him.

1464648_10202626158599070_15850055_n

After dinner Nicki headed down to the ice to take some shots of the team warming up while I went to find our seats. We were up a bit, but just off center ice- our normal seats. I like them because we can see the whole rink. I’ve had seats down on the ice or behind the players at other hockey games and ended up not seeing a lot of the action.

580623_10202626197520043_1552027147_n

Nicki found a great spot near the Predators’ goalie end and got some great action shots of the players practicing shooting goals. Hopefully she’ll be posting some of those on one of her sites– but look who ended up skating and standing in front of her… #6 captain Shea Weber!

nicki_shea_crop

This was “Nicki’s Happy Place” and the closest she’s ever been to Shea. I’m sure this violates the restraining order on her, but I won’t tell if you won’t..! 😉

DSC_5628

It’s always weird to watch a Preds game and not hear Pete Weber and Terry Crisp call the game- we’re so used to watching the games at home on our TV, but we did get to see the two on the Preds’ big screen just before the game started.

DSC_5746

The game did not go well for the Predators (you can see all of the stats here). They not only lost 3-0 (one goal scored on an empty net- ugh!), but Shea got injured on one play late in the game and had to leave the ice. He was struck in the face by a puck (OUCH!), or as the NHL calls it, “suffered an upper body injury“. My favorite player, goalie #35 Pekka Rinne, is currently out due to hip surgery. Hoping both players have speedy recoveries!

DSC_5750

Some good news, during the second intermission Nicki was able to snag the last bacon on a stick the concession stand had!

7039_10202600770159677_341218037_n

Food is always better on a stick, or fried, or deep fried, or deep fried on a stick! The only thing that would have made it better is a bit of pepper on it…and more bacon! Mmmm…bacon!

DSC_5142

Despite the loss to the Oilers we had a great time being back in SMASHVILLE, and look forward to catching another game soon.

1470405_10202630568469314_1764382936_n

The next morning we checked out of our hotel and headed back across town to Noshville for breakfast. It’s not too far from Bridgestone Arena and one of our favorite places in Nashville to eat. Normally there’s a bit of a wait for breakfast. We usually hit it on a Saturday or Sunday morning, but we seemed to time it just right on Friday. We got a parking spot up front and were seated immediately after walking in.

1424511_10202630491027378_92598557_n

I got the corned beef hash, scrambled eggs, fruit cup, orange juice, and bagel. Don’t remember what Nicki had- I was too busy enjoying my breakfast to notice. After we were done I asked for one of their pickles. It’s a kosher dill- but not sour like I’m used to getting from the supermarket. It has more of a garlic and salt flavor that I haven’t had in a pickle before and is a nice change. I grew up with both sets of grandparents making their own pickles- the Workmans made dill pickles, and the Morgans made bread & butter sweet pickles. I really enjoyed gardening with my MaMaw and Pop Morgan in Memphis, and enjoying a pickle and a soda in my Grandma and Grandpa Workman‘s ceramic shop in northern Utah. Love me some pickles! And ketchup..!

1475911_10202630337663544_1724128586_n

I have been wanting to try their bottled sodas ever since I first ate at Noshville, but always forget to pick up some. This time I got a bottle of grape, orange (which I’m enjoying as I type this), and a couple bottles of root beer. They’re quite tasty, but I have to admit they made me miss getting a grape Nehi or Sun-Rise soda when I was growing up- those will always be my favorite. I really like A&W and IBC root beer, so I’m looking forward to trying the Boylan ones this weekend.

We were surprised at how light the traffic in Nashville was on Thursday and Friday, even as we passed the Opry Mills Mall exit. “Shopryland” was packed as usual, but we decided we’d shop there when it wasn’t “Black Friday”. Nicki had been reading news stories about all the fights and more going on around the country- especially at Walmarts in Tennessee, so we avoided Black Friday sales like the Black Plague!

1459178_10202630935518490_1668525296_n

We figured it would be safe to slide by Rick’s Comic City instead. The fanboys and fangirls were all well behaved and I picked up a couple comics, a Harry Potter stocking stuffer for Nicki, and several ’60s Batman buttons for me. Saw some of the new DC Bombshell statues and an Adam Hughes Harley Quinn Cover Girls statue I don’t have (but want, hint-hint!). Also saw a couple things I might have to pick up for Nicki on our next trip if I need some more stocking stuffers (her stocking is about 3-4ft tall). We usually hit Rick’s before or after eating at McNamara’s Irish Pub just up the street, but we were both still full from breakfast at Noshville!

2367_1091866340795_5916_n

I always try to hit The Great Escape when I’m in Nashville, too. I really loved stopping by the old location off Broadway in the Vandy area (near Noshville), but they merged it with the Charlotte Avenue location a couple years ago due to rent increases in that area. It had been there for 33 years and was one of the first places in Nashville I learned how to get to.

BaQtn1nIIAAxkK-

Since we hadn’t been to the Madison one before we went to look for it. It’s smaller than their other locations but Nicki found a Doctor Who comic she was missing, and I found a few more Christmas presents for Nicki– which ended up being 25% off. They opened up at 7:30am for their Black Friday sale, and were still busy while we were there around 1-2pm. And like at Rick’s, the customers were all well behaved.

1472824_10202631639496089_2067236845_n

One of our other usual stops while in Nashville or Murfreesboro is Sport Seasons. This time we hit the new location in Cool Springs. We didn’t realize the store had changed locations so when we saw “WE’VE MOVED” signs in the dark and empty windows we got a bit sad. Luckily it was still in the same shopping center and just a few doors down from it’s previous address. Nice shop, lots of Preds and Titans merch (and even some Rams and Yankees items). If/when Nicki and I get a sports bar in our house we could go nuts there! I did get a bit worried when Nicki found a cute kids Preds hockey jersey and baby booties. Thought I might have to take her to Walmart for a dose of “screaming kid birth control“- STAT! I was told if we have kids I lose my Batcave…NOOOOO!!! The crisis was averted and she actually ended up buying me an early Christmas present- a Pekka Rinne player jersey! We didn’t see one in my size on the rack, but as we were leaving we saw more on display in the window and went back in to check. It was already on sale and she ended up getting an additional 25% off which made it half off…she SCORES!

With the last of our purchases in the trunk we headed back home. I was really afraid the weather was going to be horrible during the trip up and back or that the I-40 road construction I ran into on my Wizard World day trip would still be going on, but other than it being cold the two days it was a really nice and quick drive.

Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving and survived Black Friday!
