Midsouthcon 2015- Thar’ be Dragons…and bats!

Another Midsouthcon has come and gone in Memphis- the 33rd MSC to be exact.

It was a bit cold and rainy from time to time over the weekend, but since the con takes place inside the hotel the only thing the weather did was probably cancel some cosplay photo shoots, and give me a head cold- again. Nothing like Memphis weather to help brew some con-crud in my sinuses. This past week after the con we were in for another round of it- just as I’m starting to feel better…ugh. Saturday was cold and had sleet/snow flurries, Sunday was warm and sunny. Now my wife Nicki is sick. That’s what we deal with around here. Could be worse!

photo (64)

The con was held again at the Memphis Hilton Hotel (or the “tin can/beer can” as some locals refer to it). It’s held various cons over the years, and the past 4 0r 5 Midsouthcons. It’s right off 1-240 and Poplar Ave.– one of the main roads in Memphis. So far this is my favorite location for the con. The many years they were at the hotel near the airport were convenient for me when I lived about two miles away, and the location at the Whispering Woods in Olive Branch, MS (just over the MS state line) had some things I liked about it (great con-suite location and closer to where I live now), but this one seems to be the best so far. There are plenty of places to eat nearby, off Poplar that runs from one end of the city to the other and the interstate loop (I-240) that encircles Memphis, the Crystal Shrine Grotto located nearby  off Poplar for some great cosplay pics, more parking, and a Target close by in case of any items you forgot to pack or need for cosplay emergencies. The con is a sci-fi/fantasy literary convention at heart, but has evolved over the years to include comics, media, anime, cosplay, SCA, kids programming, and more.

MidSouthCon is a non-profit type 501(c)(3) corporation, and currently benefits such charities as the Science Fiction Writers of America Emergency Medical Fund and LITERACY MID-SOUTH. They also help to promote other cons, fan groups, and local charities.

It’s a 3 day con (Fri/Sat/Sun) and held in the Memphis area each spring, and if it wasn’t for MSC I probably would never have met my wife! (More history on MSC here – www.midsouthcon.org/aboutus/history)

I stopped by the con on Thursday night to drop off my artwork for the artshow. I got off work later than I had hoped (as usual), but I didn’t have any of my large paintings this year to display, so load in and hanging my art was pretty easy. I just brought prints and some recent sketch cover comics I had finished. Had a Doctor Who painting I wanted to get done, but the weather, day job, and sinuses just didn’t allow it this year. Will have it at ConKasterborous for sure.

I like the new space for the art show- and dealers room next door. They were flip-flopped last year, but both layouts were a big improvement over the previous years. The gamers in the old art show location seemed to have more room as well, and were off in one of the ballrooms down a side hallway. Great for gaming, but hard for folks finding the artshow before. My only complaint with the rooms was the lighting- a bit dark. I did like that there was a new Art Show banner near the door, and the times were listed on the doors. Big help.

Nicki and I met up after work on Friday at Target, then headed over to the hotel. We had a panel together at 7pm in one of the smaller panel rooms. It was called “Show Offs” and was on displaying collections. Nicki was the moderator and we were joined by book collector and ‎IT Business Analyst at IP Kiya Black, and the Curator of Science Fiction and Popular Culture for Special Collections at the University of Iowa Main Library and sci-fi fan and musician Peter Balestrieri. Enjoyed talking with both of them, and since the panelists outnumbered the attendees 4-2 we talked to each other A LOT! We each talked about our own collections, how we display them, our recent renovations of our Batcave and Fangirl rooms at home, displays we’ve done at our local library, the Ohio State University Cartoon Library, as well as other collectors like Hollywood historian Bob Burns and MSC guest author John Jackson Miller. We also learned some great info on protecting collectibles- especially books from Peter, who even had information sheets on preservation and restoration links to hand out. Will be very handy in the near future! While we were talking Nicki had a slide show of our rooms and collections playing on her iPad.

I think one of the reasons we may have had a small turnout was we were up against opening ceremonies going on at the same time in the main ballroom, and we weren’t listed in the panel description of the MSC pocket program guide. Had heard other panels were left off over the weekend, too. Happens. One of my biggest pet peeves with MSC is the amount of panels, repetitive panels, and conflicting panel times. I do love to attend or speak on panels at the con, and there’s A LOT to choose from, I just feel sometimes they end up splitting their audience and not having as many folks show up for some in doing so. I’ve had the problem of being scheduled on one panel while another I’d reallllllly love to check out is happening at the same time down the hall, or Nicki and I being on different panels at the same time- always want to hear her panels. I’ve also heard some guests say they felt like they were saying the same thing as they were in an earlier panel, or that they didn’t get to see as much of the con as they would have liked to because they were so busy on panels all weekend. I also wish they wouldn’t schedule panels back to back to back in the meeting rooms. It can be hard to clear the room for the next panel, and cutting the panels short can really cut off a good discussion just as it’s getting going after everyone has introduced themselves. It’s also tough to get from one side of the con in time for another panel if you’re on two back to back that aren’t in the same room or hall. It’s a tough tightrope to walk when scheduling programming at cons- what’s too much or too little..? How do you get all of your guests enough face time with fans? How do you justify the free pass (or other incentives) you give to a guest? Just glad I don’t have to make those decisions, and do thank the MSC staff for inviting Nicki and me to be a part of their programming. I’ve helped put on two small one day shows, a two day con, and volunteered at other shows. Running a con is not something I ever want to attempt to do again, and I don’t envy anyone who does. It can be a very thankless job, and a majority of the feedback you hear can be negative- the folks with gripes are usually the loudest since the folks without any are too busy having a good time to complain. Big thanks to everyone involved with this show. Every year I see improvements!

After our display panel was over we headed across the street to have dinner with our friends Rhonda, Tim, Traci, Rachel, and John Jackson Miller. John had brought along a few of his friends from high school. JJM is originally from Memphis and comes back each year to MSC. We had a great dinner, and even had one of the waiters ask us about the con and some recent comic story lines he had missed. I had another panel to get to so I had to leave a few minutes before everyone else, and Nicki was dropped back off at the hotel by Tim and Traci and attended my panel once she was there.

My last panel for Friday was “Prepping for an art show” at 10pm. We had seven panelists this time and I was afraid we’d outnumber the attendees again, but this time we had a good crowd- especially for that time of night. We were joined by MSC Artist Guest of Honor Melissa Gay and discussed getting ready for convention art shows, group shows, one man shows, pricing art, promotions, receptions, and more. I have done 4 one man art shows around Memphis, many group shows in Memphis and Hernando, MS, and and have participated in the MSC one for several years now. Hope to do a show with Nicki and some of her photography some day.

After walking around and looking at costumers we said goodnight to whichever friends still happened to be up and wandering the con. It was getting late and Nicki and I had a long drive home, so we headed south back to our bed. Sometimes it’s nice to stay at the hotel a con is held, and sometimes it’s nice just to sleep in your own bed.

The next morning we made a pit stop at Chick-Fil-A for some quick breakfast, and then headed to the con for my “The Rise and Fall of Saturday Morning Cartoons“. I forgot my Rice Krispies Treats to hand out at the panel, and forgot my new Batman shirt to change into later- opps! Panel was in the small room again, but was well attended. Cartoons had been showing there before our panel. Got to talk toons with the Commercial Appeal’s John Biefuss, author Mark Berry, MSC assistant programming manager Robert Brogden, and Lucas Leverett. We talked a lot about the cartoons (and live action shows) we loved as kids, which ones we had been watching as adults, some history of the beginnings of Saturday morning cartoons, and why they disappeared after over 50 years of being in our homes. My favorite parts were when one of us would bring up a show and others would say, “Oh, man- I loved that show!” The scary part was doing some research for this panel and finding out that Saturday morning cartoons had only been around a few more years than I have! There were a lot of things that contributed to the extinction of Saturday morning cartoon programming- video games, cartoon channels, VHS/DVD, infomercials, the internet, and cheaper live action shows were just a few of the reasons. Sad in a way, but kids today usually don’t have to worry about missing any shows. If we missed an episode of anything it could be years before we ever saw it again- if ever..!

Nicki wanted to catch Author Guest of Honor Cory Doctorow‘s panel at the same time as my cartoons panel. He discussed his career as an author, blogger, and his views on copyright laws. She bought a copy of his book and I later got it signed when she had to her Doctor Who panel. Looking forward to reading it and checking out his blog and podcast.

DSC_7859

My next panel at noon was on “The Psychology of Arkham“. This time I was joined by Josh Plock, Siri Eroom, James Weakley, Brittany Bailey, and Robert Brogden. If you know me, you know I loves me some Batman and his rogues gallery!

DSC_7860

One of my favorite bat-adversary is Harley Quinn, who was created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for Batman: The Animated Series, and then later introduced to the DC Comics universe. Fellow panelist Brittany was cosplaying as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, and even had an Arkham name badge on her lab coat. Need one for my Harley Quinn collection!

11072283_10206372999667755_4615840150472237155_n

We had a great turnout for the panel, and we discussed subjects like the various Gotham career criminals that have had stays at Arkham, what psychosis drives them, which ones go to Blackgate Prison instead, and is Bruce Wayne/Batman just as crazy as the crazies he catches, and is he responsible for the creation of some? We also discussed Narcissism, the difference between a sociopath and a psychopath, how “insane/insanity” is a legal term, and some Arkham history and trivia.

DSC_7907

Next up was the Doctor Who panel that Nicki was moderating at 2pm in the grand ballroom. She was joined by panelists Sylvia Cox (MSC Guest Liaison), Josh Plock, Kathryn Sullivan, Bill Tracer, Bruce “Doc” Anders, and special guest K-9!

DSC_7904

Last year the panel was in the smallest room at the con and was not only standing room only inside the room, but had folks standing in the hallway as well. The crowd wasn’t as big, but everyone felt more comfortable in the bigger space (Thanks, Kelly!). Many folks discussed their first Doctor, favorite companions, the Doctor in other media, how they felt about the current TV series new Doctor and Master/Mistress (spoilers!), and what the future holds for the series. We even had a TARDIS appear midway through the panel.

DSC_7929

There were some great Doctor Who cosplayers who attended, too- these were the ones I was able to round up after the panel. Rounding up cosplayers for a photo op can be like herding cats!

Nicki has donned the 4th Doctors scarf and hat in the past, and has plans to do some more Doctor Who cosplaying at future cons, and I wouldn’t mind trying to make a costume or two for myself. We’ll be heading back to ConKasterborous this year. Had a great time there last summer.

Once I had wrangled the costumed Whovians for a photo, we headed across the con to our next panel- “Holy-DVD-Release, Batman!” where we discussed the recent ’60s Batman TV show finally being released on DVD and Blu-Ray. Nicki was moderator again (she’s really good at it), and she and I were joined again by fellow panelists reviewer John Biefuss, author Mark Berry, and MSC assistant programming manager Robert Brogden. Had a great time reminiscing about our favorite episodes and villains, and why all the wait for the release. We asked some trivia questions, passed around some bat-books, and I even did my Adam West impression…which didn’t go over well. “Holy-Tough Crowd, Batman!”
lin_batman_dvd linbatmandvd
Nicki bought the 3 season DVD collection for me back this fall for my birthday. I never thought I’d actually own these episodes..! The closest I’ve come was the ’60s movie on DVD and Blu-ray, and recently copies I recorded off of cable before our DVR died. Before that it was either race home from school to catch re-runs, or later record some on VHS. The fantastic restoration job done on the episodes for this series set make them look amazing. The colors pop, and there’s so much detail that just got washed out in the syndicated ones I’ve caught on TV over the years. I’ve gotten a kick out of watching favorite episodes, remembering ones I had forgotten, and seeing others I somehow missed.

DSC_7944

After that we had Nicki’s next panel – “Do You Have That Fandom In My Size?“. We were in the same room so we didn’t have to go far. Great turnout for this panel, too- standing room only. Nicki was moderator on this one as well, and joined by panelists Tim Brown, Laura Smith, Johnny Dellarocca, and MSC programming manager Kelly Brogden (who describes herself as “beyond fluffy“). Topics included the lack of larger sizes/colors/styles of geek friendly clothing, why more female characters aren’t included along with the boys on merch and promotional materials, why does anything geared towards female fans have to be pink, and why can’t guys like Wonder Woman or My Little Pony? The panelists also discussed why we’re not seeing more female live action and animated movies and TV shows, and how hopefully the success of Agent Carter will help get more made.

10926388_10206378868334468_3209515918895448933_n

It became a very lively discussion, and was attended by guys and girls of all sizes, races, ages, and fandoms. Kelly said she and her husband Robert had made her own tees because she can’t find them in their size. Johnny applauded that and encouraged folks to be confident in themselves, wear clothes that fit- whatever size you may be, get creative with your fandom, customize clothing/costumes to meet your needs, and find your own style.

10885365_10206378425243391_2898413886371605515_n

All panelists agreed that fans should like what you like, support what you like, and embrace fans of all types. I’d love to see another panel like this at a future MSC- and other cons. Would also like to see more Captain Chaos cosplayers!

We didn’t have another panel until my 6pm “Drawing Comics Pencil and Digital“. I was the moderator, and was joined by artists Kelly Williams and Larry Cathey. We discussed drawing inside and outside of a computer, how we determine which projects need to be traditionally drawn or which need to be done digitally, how we all got started working digitally, and what other tools and art mediums we like to use. Nice to talk shop and answer art questions for about an hour.

After that we caught our buddy Tim Brown’s Fanfilms panel he was moderating. They had shown a few examples of fanfilms before we got there. By the time we arrived and got seated they were discussing some of the dos and don’ts of making fanfilms. Tim runs the Superman Celebration Fan Film Festival and Competition in Metropolis, IL each June. Once his panel was over we joined him, his wife, and our friends Mike and Rhonda for dinner down the street at Genghis Grill. Saw several other con folks there, too.

After dinner we headed back to the con to catch the Masquerade. We stood in line for a bit until a con staff member noticed that we and the couple in front of us were wearing guest badges. He offered to let us have early entry to get good seats, so we took him up on it. Gotta take advantage of con-perks like that when you  can! Once inside we ran into Tim who was at the back of the room setting up equipment to video the costume contest. We grabbed a couple seats in front of his riser. I ended up giving my seat away to a cosplayer and joining Timmy so I could get better shots. There were more and more arriving and was surprised many weren’t in the costume contest. I’ve been in it before a couple of times, and it can take up a lot of time on Saturday, so I can see why some would pass on it.

10559814_10206379086979934_5927527150066863369_n

There were about 2 dozen or so entries, and most didn’t do a skit so it actually went by a lot faster than I had expected. The younger contestants really seemed to have fun. It was getting kind of late and we had about a 45 minute drive home ahead of us so we didn’t stick around to see who the winners were, or stay for the dance party.

DSC_8085SM  DSC_8119SM

There was a time we wouldn’t miss one, but there are times when our inner Danny Glover reminds us that we’re getting to old for this shit! We also needed to be back early for the Kaffee Klatsches in the morning.
11081459_10206378434083612_9218867937843031389_n
What’s a Kaffee Klatsch? It’s basically breakfast with the Guests of Honor at the con. We signed up to eat with Dragon Dronet– one of my favorite SPFX artists and stuntmen (Dragon’s been involved with Batman:Dead End, Buffy, Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, and many more!) , and he’s just a really cool cat,  martial artist, and musician. We were joined by our friends Marcus, Kelly, Dragon’s friend and sparring partner Chad, and a couple other folks. We got to talk one on one with Dragon and find out what he’s been working on, hear some fun behind the scenes stories, and hear more about his love of music. We met Dragon several years ago at a past MSC, and I’ve been lucky to run into him the three times I attended the San Diego Comic Con.

After we finished our breakfast, Dragon excused himself to go get ready for his upcoming panels and fight demo with Chad later. We ended up running into Timmy in the hallway outside of the “Building Props” panel he was going to be on with Dragon (he was carrying his trusty flask-saber he built for Star Wars Celebration a few years back- and wearing one of my Abby Normal tees). Fellow panelist Kelli Harrell was waiting for the room to open as well.

10532787_10206379355186639_4217924025042947880_n

Once inside Tim and Kelli were joined by guest artist brothers Michael and Paul Bielaczyc, local Rocky Horror propmaster Timothy Romine, Dragon Dronet, and Chad Volpe.

DSC_8109SM

Michael and Paul discussed how they made the props and make-up for their ice wizard costume Paul wore in the masquerade the night before. Kelli shared some of her favorite materials to use, and Timothy let us in on a trade secret- painted googly eyes for studs/rivets!

Dragon brought along some movie props from his personal collection including the mask from The Mask and others.

Two of my favorites were Dragon’s personal fighting helmet (which is over 25yrs old and he still uses to spar in) and an armored glove from the movie The Chronicles of Riddick. Dragon passed them around and let each of us examine how they were made.
11069356_10206379310545523_8673394099150146952_n

They were incredibly cool to see up close and to actually hold. I was amazed at the detail on the gauntlet and it’s range of motion. Also thought it was cool that Dragon’s fighting helmet was partially made of cardboard and a leather jacket from Goodwill!

11038117_10206379336306167_3984481007788064564_n

After the prop panel was an armor building panel, and the group was joined by my buddy John Clark– another prop builder and costumer I first ran into in Metropolis at the Superman Celebration.

13192_10206379316145663_2909244930395010702_n

Chad showed us part of his samurai armor he built that Dragon called his “cosplay” armor- only because he does fight demos at cons and renaissance fairs in this (he has another other scratch built “full dress” samurai armor) and it’s made with shoestrings! This guy knows his Japanese fighting armors and weapons, and how to be creative when making costumes. Really wish I would have had more time to discuss that sort of thing with him over the weekend.
11071597_10206379390347518_1522952301976102500_n
Since Dragon had to do a fight demo soon after this panel and wasn’t going to have time to go back to his room to suit up, he donned his alligator skin armor during the panel while telling us the history of it. Quite an interesting backstory…but it’s better when he tells it!

The armor also had a lot of character and interesting details, including some Draconian emblems from Buck Rogers!

DSC_8253

Everybody got a kick out of examining the armor up close, and seeing the difference between the screen used gauntlet and the armor Dragon uses for sparring!

lindragonmsc2015

After the armor panel we stopped by the dealers room and checked out Dragon’s table. He had some of the props from the panel, plus a few others. Incredible work! Would love to be able to collect more props and prop replicas. I have a few batarangs, but could always use more. 😉

Speaking of incredible prop work, we stopped by John Clark’s table in the dealers room, t00. Nicki had shield envy..!

10580208_10206387810198009_3788277320116703650_n

We did a bit of shopping in the room and picked up a few Lego figures, some hand made Doctor Who and Robin key chains, and I got a Batcycle and some comics from my buddy Eric Crimmins at his table- which included a 3D Dave Stevens comic…thanks, Eric!

After shopping and socializing in the dealers room, we went next door to the main ball room for Dragon and Chad’s fight demo. This was the first time we had seen both of them fully suited up. Pretty impressive. Once you see Dragon in his armor it’s not hard to believe he’s been a Predator and a fighting gorilla.

They first did a bit of sparring with some Shinai bamboo Kendo swords. As they fought, they would rib each other- sometimes literally!

Other guys who love what they do for fun and a living, are my fellow MidSouth Cartoonists Association members Lonnie Easterling and Greg Cravens. They were set up in artists alley drawing funny over the weekend. You can check out their toons at spudcomics.com and  hubriscomics.com.

After the fight demo, Dragon and Chad headed down the hall to a costuming panel called “It’s All In The Details”.
DSC_8544
They were joined by theater costumer Sona Amroyan, entertainer Johnny Dellarocca, and moderator/cosplayer Christopher Randolph. They discussed the differences, and similarities in costuming and prop building for movies/television, theater, and cosplaying. Said goodbye to Dragon and Chad after the panel.

We caught one other panel on Podcasting, which included Author Guest of Honor Cory Doctorow as a panelist. Learned a lot about getting started, interviewing guests, equipment, and more. Hope to do a HGWT podcast soon…

Before heading out we stopped back by the Memphis Star Wars Fan Force table upstairs in the lobby to see our friend John Jackson Miller again. John’s been busy writing Star Wars and Star Trek novels lately. He’s also written for tons of comics, including Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Iron Man, and the Simpsons. Like I said earlier, JJM’s originally from Memphis, and still has lots of friends and family in town, so this con is his yearly homecoming- and it lets him escape the brutal and isolating Wisconsin winters. JJM likes to talk, and this con is a great opportunity for him to do that. We kid that he ate Trivial Pursuit games and TV Guides while growing up, and can now regurgitate trivia on demand. Ask him about TV show spin-offs or comic sales figures and you’ll see what I mean!

After saying goodbye to John, we heading home- tired from a full weekend of fun! We stopped on the way back for some barbeque at Memphis BBQ Co., and once home I hung my con badge with the others I’ve collected over the years and called this con over for me…until next spring.

Would like to thank Carlin Stuart, Danny and Kim Chamberlain, Kelly and Robert Brogden, all the con staff and volunteers, our fellow panelists, Dragon Dronet and other MSC guests, all the folks who took the time to attend our panels, and all those cosplayers who were kind enough to pose for pics.

Sorry I didn’t get to run into Comics Guest of Honor Ethan Van Sciver, but we’ve met a few times before, and I’m sure we’ll cross paths at a future con again soon!

Hoggy-Warty-Hogwarts! My trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter pt5 Attending Hogwarts

Welcome back Wizards, Witches, and Muggles.

holidaycard

In my last HGWT blog we boarded the Hogwarts Express at Platform 9 3/4 from London’s King’s Cross Station to Hogsmeade in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal in Orlando, FL.

I’m here to tell you in this blog post about our adventures in Hogsmeade and Hogwarts Castle– the home of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!

DSC_2307

The train ride over was a lot quicker than I thought it would be, but still a lot of fun and different going each direction to and from. We had to keep our heads on a swivel as things would happen “outside the train” on in the hallway on either side of us. Definitely not a boring ride, and not that long of a wait in the queue line while we were there. A couple times we actually just walked right up and caught the next train.
1471792_10205260525931909_5071588596983385362_n

I hate to use the word “magical” to describe walking into Hogsmeade for the first time, but that’s exactly how it felt. Snow covered roofs lined both sides of the streets. It wasn’t too cold outside, but there were a few times it did get a bit chilly in the shade when overcast. People filled the narrow streets. We were there the first week of November – can’t imagine what this place is like at the height of the peak season!

DSC_8196   DSC_2383

The attention to detail on the storefronts and other items in Hogsmeade was just as impressive as the ones in Diagon Alley.

DSC_2325  DSC_2327

I loved the pixies in the cauldron (above). The pot would fill with water and dump out on unsuspecting visitors unfortunate to be standing under it when someone would cast a spell with their wands.

DSC_2321  DSC_2353

There were several interactive wand spots outside the storefronts and some spells seemed a little harder than others to cast. There were some great shop interiors, too.

DSC_2317

There was Zonko’s Joke Shop which offered similar things as Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes/Fred and George’s shop in Diagon Alley, and Honeydukes magical sweets shop where Chocolate Cauldrons, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, Chocolate Frogs and more can be purchased.

DSC_8314

It was soooooooo tempting to go crazy in both shops. Two of my favorite things as a kid were going into joke/magic shops and candy shops. I guess they still are, and I was literally a big kid in a candy store while at Honeydukes. I have some really fond memories of going to the candy shop that was in Overton Square in Memphis, TN back in the ’70s, and love stopping in at the candy stores on Broadway in Nashville, TN when we go up for Predators games. Also loved visiting a magic shop in Las Vegas in the ’90s- not sure if it’s still there or not. We had one magic shop in Memphis (The Fun Shop) I would frequent near the U of M, but it’s closed now. 🙁

DSC_8188  DSC_8298

I loved shopping and exploring the inside of the Harry Potter stores we got a chance to enter. You could actually mail off letters at the Owl Post with official Harry Potter stamps and Hogsmeade postmarks. I bought Nicki a set of the stamps. This beastly book was quite hilarious when kids or others would pass by that weren’t paying attention. It was was inside a cage for a reason!

DSC_8301  DSC_8300

Lots of other fun stuff inside the Owl Post, including something really familiar- The Quibbler! (You can see Luna Lovegood with one in the movies. It’s a wizarding tabloid published and edited by  her father Xenophilius Lovegood.)

DSC_0146

They are made here in Memphis/Bartlett, TN at American Paper Optics. The company supplies many haunted houses and other events, as well as toys, videos, and more. (You can read more about them in my blog post- In your face 3-D! My trip to American Paper Optics.)

DSC_0041_2_2album

I was able to pick up a copy of The Quibbler from John the owner of APO during my visit to his 3D company- and he gave me some glasses to hand out at mine and Nicki’s wedding! They showed hearts whenever you looked at lights. Actually had some folks ask us what part of the wedding would be in 3D! Actually found out about APO during one of my first trips to Florida and Busch Gardens’ Howl-O-Scream. Was surprised to find out it was just a mile or so up the road from “Stage Fright” the haunt I volunteered at in Bartlett. Small world!

DSC_8189

I’m glad we were able to buy our wands at the main Ollivander’s shop in Diagon Alley. The Hogsmeade location always had a line of folks waiting to get in, so we didn’t get a chance to explore it- maybe next time. (More of our shopping adventures at Ollivander’s and other shops are in my earlier post- Diagonally! My trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Pt2-Diagon Alley.)

10696301_10205260525731904_6651485085137534438_n  10612967_10205260524771880_7919836941759137547_n

We also ate and had more butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks Inn restaurant which is located near the entrance to Hogsmeade. (You can read more about the other food and drink options at my last post- “Pt.3 Let’s Eat- And Drink!.)

DSC_8191

There were plenty of interactive wand stops all over Hogsmeade. Some of my favorites were at the Quidditch shop, Zonko’s, and the book store. Thought the moving Quidditch trunk and opening Beedle The Bard book were a lot of fun.

DSC_8199

There were folks dressed as characters from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and from time to time the Frog Choir performed on stage at the edge of Hogsmeade and just outside the entrance to Hogwarts.

DSC_2566

Triwizard Tournament Champions also performed on stage for the crowds as a Hogwarts student emceed the event.

10712814_10205281477180375_8082945407700838312_n 10413350_10205281468620161_4578830132027755136_n

She was very energetic and entertaining and really reminded me of a younger Sandra Bullock. During some appearances visitors could have their pictures taken with all of them, and sometimes there wasn’t time. I missed a couple photo ops with some other costumed characters around the park. Sometimes you just had to be at the right place at the right time.

DSC_2537

For this appearance it was ladies first, so the female students from the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic performed their magical ribbon routine.

10570298_10205281470220201_6586615076198164402_n

I can see why Ron is such a fan of them. Very graceful.

10311773_10205281470780215_2810622901911858874_n

Then it was time for the “gentlemen”from the Durmstrang Institute to take the stage and perform some magical martial arts.

DSC_2477

There was lots of grunting and striking their staffs on the stage, but these guys were pretty light on their feet!

10416633_10205281472860267_2664229128770746854_n

Both schools put on a great show. They would walk from Hogwarts down to the stage, and we got to catch them a few times during the week. We really liked all of the shows we saw throughout the park that week. I think my favorite was the Deathly Hallows/The Tale of the Three Brothers puppet show over in Diagon Alley. We saw that show twice. Great mix of live action and puppetry, and looked a lot like the animation in the Deathly Hallows movie.

DSC_2333

We passed on riding the two roller-coasters in Hogsmeade– Dragon Challenge and The Flight of the Hippogriff. Kind of wished we had at least rode the Hippogriff one. It’s a bit more family friendly, but Nicki’s not a big fan of coasters.

DSC_8257

Apparently we missed seeing an animatronic hippogriff (Buckbeak) and Hagrid’s hut when entering the ride, and we also missed walking through the champion’s tent before the Dragon Challenge.

DSC_8160

The dragons once fought a simulated duel, but that stopped after a rider was injured by flying debris a while back.

DSC_8265

But as awesome as Hogsmeade and it’s shops and restaurant all were, we made the trip to go to Hogwarts Castle and attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!

DSC_2375

Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts,
Teach us something please,
Whether we be old and bald,
Or young with scabby knees,
Our heads could do with filling,
With some interesting stuff,
For now they’re bare and full of air,
Dead flies and bits of fluff,
So teach us things worth knowing,
Bring back what we’ve forgot,
Just do your best, we’ll do the rest,
And learn until our brains all rot.

–The Hogwarts school song

 DSC_8534
I have to say that seeing Hogwarts for the first time was incredibly impressive! I loved seeing the white dragon sitting atop Gringotts Wizarding Bank, but seeing this version of Hogwarts Castle in person made the money spent getting there worth it all.

DSC_8336  DSC_8227

Actually, seeing the look on my wife’s face after she saw it for the first time was priceless! The only thing that could have made it even better would be a nighttime boat ride across a lake to get to it, but I have to admit that standing in front of it was geeking me out! The way it’s built makes it look bigger/taller than it really is. Still, it’s REALLY big!

DSC_8230  DSC_8238

We entered the front gates and stowed our camera, photos, and butterbeer mugs in a locker. Like at Gringotts, they were free and a safe place to put our stuff while touring the castle. We made our way around to the back of the castle and through the greenhouse entrance.

10675762_10205260524171865_5808469265478888900_n  10730844_10205260523851857_4912993981633983228_n

The queue line moved fairly quickly and only became slightly congested as we got to the main entrance for the Harry Potter and The Forbidden Journey ride.

10485847_10205282253679787_5027378157306399860_n
We saw some of our favorite things from the movie such as the Sorting Hat as we winded our way through the dark hallways of Hogwarts Castle. I just wanted to stop and take it all in, but had to keep moving. Again, the attention to detail was impressive, and Nicki would point out things she recognized that I might have missed otherwise. As much fun as I was having, it was even more fun watching her experience it all.

1743583_10205257418094215_8291255805279544512_n  1796456_10205257417294195_3528254192714482533_n

Nicki was quite excited to see the entrance to Hogwarts’ Headmaster Albus Dumbledore‘s office. It was a cool surprise and looked just like the movie. There were so many times I forgot I was at a theme park in Florida and not a castle or movie set in England.

10169263_10205272809163680_7568999834661567566_n

The Pensieve of Hogwarts and other artifacts were throughout the castle. I loved seeing the magical moving portraits including the Fat Lady, and of course the four founders of the Hogwarts houses– Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin. I know there was plenty I missed, because each time I would go to other parts of the park I’d notice something new I hadn’t seen before.
10172817_10205272805683593_564662654160161586_n
Before getting into the ride itself, we were greeted by Harry, Hermione, and Ron. A large dragon skeleton hung from the rafters above us. Throughout the queue and ride there were other familiar faces and props.

hp-2sm

We took our seats on the motion ride and…well, I don’t want to give away any surprises. I will say the Quidditch scene was my favorite, and as you can see in the photo above, we found another dragon! The ride was much like the Escape From Gringotts and the Spiderman ride- a mixture of animatronics, projections, moving cars, wires, mirrors, pyrotechnics, and other great effects. I would love to watch the movies this way!

10409184_10205260522651827_2485049070789897494_n  DSC_8242

At the end of the ride there was a great gift shop. It was a bit crowded as folks exited the ride, but I enjoyed checking out all merchandise as we made our way over to the photo counter. Wish we would have had time to ride this and Escape From Gringotts more than once, but there was just sooooooo much to see and do and only a few short days to experience it all.

DSC_8173

I’ve said before that if you’re an Elvis fan you have to go to Graceland once, if you’re a Superman fan you need to go to the Superman Celebration in Metropolis, IL, and now I can say that if you’re a Harry Potter fan you’ve got to go to Hogwarts!

We’ll be back for sure!

#HappyVD – how I spent my Valentines Day with my fangirl wife.

Ah, February 14th- the one time a year you can share #HappyVD with everyone on social media. 🙂

10509533_884535034930264_7676688137514345904_n

We had planned on heading up to Nashville to watch the Preds play at the Bridgestone Arena, but the hotel prices were double normal for this weekend. We decided to stay home and catch a later game. Was afraid I was going to have to work today (worked last Saturday), but will have to work late next week instead. Whew..!

This is how my Valentines Day (or Saturday the 14th) started off.

551512_10206090265959589_8965351918804745648_n

Slept in a little late, but our furry alarm clocks informed us we had slept long enough a little after 9:30am. I fed the cats and then my wife Nicki and I exchanged gifts before breakfast. I got a Batman bag with Bat-boxers, a Penguin hockey tee, dark chocolate, iTunes gift card, and an iPod nano! I was not expecting it at all. I recently had an mp3 player die on me so this is much appreciated. She was happy with her Agent Carter tee, Minion underwear, chocolate, and Funko Mass Effect POP! figures I gave her (had dropped off flowers to her at work earlier in the week).

When I asked her what she wanted for breakfast she said, “BACON!” Ah, a girl after my own clogged arteries.

10998030_10206091414788309_5208584522800483091_n

I made us some French toast and bacon for breakfast and after watching a little hockey on TV we headed out to our local comic shops. I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted by the sun and warm weather! No need for seat warmers for the drive into Memphis today.

At Comic Cellar (3620 Austin Peay Highway #2 – Memphis, TN 38128) I picked up some Harley Quinn Valentines Day Special comics, including some blank sketch covers. Nicki picked up a Gotham Academy, Captain Marvel, Secret Six and Darth Vader #1 (Vader mask/Anakin variant cover). The shop was busy with a lot of gamers. The store has several tables set up for tabletop and card game tournaments. Most of its sales these days seem to be more from gaming than comics, but they do have comic subscriptions and do special orders. It’s on the far side of Memphis and about a 45min drive, but we try to get out there at least once a month to pick up comics in our hold box, and my Eaglemoss Batmobiles. It’s also the shop where Nicki’s “Fangirl Wednesday” was born.
10888631_10206091705115567_6055349669565229812_n

Next stop was one of our other local comic shops- Comics and Collectibles (4730 Poplar #2 – Memphis, TN 38117) in East Memphis. It’s Memphis’ oldest comic shop. I picked up a POP! Poison Ivy figure, plus some Harley comics, Batgirl and Darth Vader blank sketch covers, and a new Phantom comic with a cover by Darwyn Cooke cover and Brent Schoonover interior art.

10606520_10204861173113036_2817102193734776083_n

Talked to Donnie, the store’s manager a bit about the upcoming “Donnie-Con“, also know as the Memphis Comic Expo– June 6th and 7th at the Agricenter. I was there for the first one last year and had a great time. Going from a one day show to a two day con, and I’ll be back as a guest again this year- along with a BUNCH of other incredible guests! (Full line-up here.)

16828_10206092129926187_3298461087248795166_n  10988927_10206092194127792_82099872343399103_n

We made a quick stop at Target for my wife to pick up a new cast iron skillet to use for dinner tonight- and to keep me in line when needed! Then we stopped by our favorite local spot- area 51 ice cream (117 W Commerce St – Hernando, MS 38632). There was a constant stream of customers- some regulars like us, and some new ones. Nicki got a scoop of the Chocolate Almond Amaretto and I got the Blood Orange Sorbet. We also sampled the Coffee Toffee and Peanut Butter Banana ice cream. They make their own ice cream from scratch in-store, and use a lot of local produce. The flavors change each day and can be seasonal, but you can see what’s available each day on their Facebook page. You can also sample any of the flavors at the counter before you decide. If you can’t find a flavor you like you don’t like ice cream!

1505995_10206096863839834_66160824269057884_n

Once we got home Nicki started syncing up my new iPod and cooking dinner. I had worked a 12hr shift yesterday and had an hour+ drive home thanks to traffic (another great Friday the 13th!), and it hit me once I sat down on the couch- Zzzzz..! I was out in no time, and woke up to a smoke filled house! Nicki had seared the steaks for dinner in the new skillet and they had smoked a bit more than she had expected. Scared the hell out of me! We opened the windows and a few minutes later the smoke had cleared and dinner was ready.

10991332_10206096863239819_3414179008147693865_n

It all turned out great- New York strips, salad with goat cheese, and roasted asparagus by candlelight. I did have to fight our cat Harley Quinn for my seat!

971286_10202396231011024_1797126713_n

The searing gave the steaks a nice outer bark/crust and kept the meat tender and juicy inside. If you know my eating habits you know I put ketchup on just about everything, but not this time! The bit of sea salt and pepper Nicki put on the steak along with the searing made the steaks perfect. Nice job, Babe!

10407270_10206096863639829_422256124292235186_n

And if that wasn’t enough she made dark chocolate covered strawberries for desert. One of my all time favorites.

10675691_10206094028413648_4713402133124980425_n

After dinner we both curled up on the couch to watch the Nashville Predators play the New Jersey Devils on Fox Sports South. Glad I dressed appropriately for her today. Nicki is a huge Preds fan, and apparently this is a sexy look for my wife.”Too sexy, too sexy!” While we watched the game she helped me get an iTunes account set up so I could use my new gift card, and then showed me how to download songs and podcasts. She’s the computer tech in our house.

216569_1983842279636_778860_n

BTW- the Preds won 2-1!

So to recap- my wife’s idea of a fun Valentines Day was bacon, comic book shops, ice cream, steaks, chocolate covered strawberries, and us curled up on the couch watching hockey together.

222022_1982481885627_6592908_n

Yep, I’m a lucky fella. 🙂

Since today was crazy at restaurants around town, I’ll be taking Nicki and her mom out for dinner tomorrow night. Looking forward to getting back up to SMASHVILLE soon!

Hope you all had a Happy Valentines Day, too. It’s late, so I’m going to stop now and go sleep with my wife. 😉

“Don’t talk rubbish. There is no platform nine and three-quarters.” My trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter pt4 The Hogwarts Express

“Don’t talk rubbish. There is no platform nine and three-quarters.“—Vernon Dursley, Harry’s uncle.

owlcage   nicki_london

Well, actually there is one- if you know where to look. 😉

DSC_7798

King’s Cross Station in London- or for us Yanks on this side of the pond, King’s Cross Station in the London section of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal in Orlando, FL is where you can find it here in the states.

DSC_7799  DSC_8092

You have to walk past it on your way to Diagon Alley (be sure to step inside the phone booth to hear a message from the Ministry of Magic).

warf

It’s just past the Fisherman’s Wharf area of the San Francisco section of the park that has the hanging JAWS shark. It’s not too far from The Transformers, The Simpsons, or Mel’s Drive Inn. Diagon Alley is actually located on the site of the old JAWS ride.

linjaws  jaws

I really enjoyed the JAWS ride when I was there about 12 years ago, and it was good to see “Bruce” again. As much fun as it was back then, the new addition of Diagon Alley is just amazing. Now that it and  Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure are connected by the  Hogwarts Express I hate to say I don’t miss the old boat ride. Unfortunately there was one park goer we passed as we were leaving who was in for some disappointment. “If we don’t get to go on the JAWS ride I’m never coming back here!”  Uh, hope she liked Diagon Alley..!

DSC_8079  DSC_8060

When we first got to the park on Tuesday we went straight to the “Escape From Gringotts” ride in Diagon Alley (you can read more about it here). Later that day we headed over to King’s Cross Station to take the Hogwarts Express to Hogsmeade.

DSC_8068  DSC_8076

Before hopping the train to Islands of Adventure, we stopped to check out The Knight Bus and met conductor Stan Shunpike and the talking Shrunken Head. It was pretty cool, and parked across the straight from King’s Cross Station and 12 Grimmauld Place (the ancestral home of the Black family).

DSC_1459SM  DSC_1448SM

At night if you keep an eye on the upstairs window of 12 Grimmauld Place you may catch a glimpse of Kreacher, the Black house-elf. He pulls back the curtains to see who’s downstairs at the front door.

DSC_8098

We walked into King’s Cross, presented our park passes, scanned our finger prints, and headed down the tunnel to look for Platform 9¾ and the Hogwarts Express – our magical ride to Hogsmeade and Hogwarts Castle– home of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

DSC_8119SM

After walking the queue line through the station and snaking back and forth a few times we passed through to Platform 9¾. The first time we walked through the wall we didn’t even realize it. There weren’t many folks in front of us so we missed seeing the effect. Our next time we saw someone taking a photo of someone passing through the wall. It’s a Pepper’s ghost type of effect.

photo 2 (11)

DSC_8110

It was very cool, but seeing and hearing the Hogwarts Express was even cooler! As you can tell by the photo above, my wife Nicki was a happy Harry Potter fan!

DSC_8142SM

The line moved fairly quickly and it didn’t take long for us to board the train. Once inside the train car it was another time we felt like we had stepped into the movie. There were eight of us to a car- four on each side. Each trip we tried to sit in a different spot.

hogwartsexprnicki  photo 3 (8)

During the train ride we could see silhouettes and hear Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and the sweets Trolley witch out in the hallway. We even saw chocolate frogs clinging to the other side of the car’s windows.

dementor

And then a Dementor showed up! Lucky for us Harry knows how to produce the Patronus Charm.

photo 4 (7)

On the opposite side of the car was a “window” that showed many characters from the movies including Buckbeak, Hagrid, The Knight Bus, and…

photo 1 (11)

photo 2 (12)

Fred and George Weasley– the Weasley twins, and an ad for their shop Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes! The view was different on the ride in each direction to and from Hogwarts.

DSC_8146

The trip seemed to take only a few minutes, but was extremely entertaining and the attention to detail did not go unnoticed or unappreciated.

DSC_2313SM  DSC_2315

We had been waiting to take this ride for a while now, and it was definitely worth the wait. Really hope to be a passenger again soon.

“Bartender- another round of Butterbeer!” My trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter pt3 Let’s eat- and drink!

Back this time to talk about the food and drink we experienced on our recent travels.

While walking around a theme park all day, you’re going to work up an appetite and a thirst. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal in Orlando, FL has some unique ways to take care of those needs for witches, wizards, and muggles alike.

Granted, some things looked more appetizing than others. Think I’ll leave dishes like Stewed Eels to Andrew Zimmern and Bizarre Foods. 😉

Just give me something simple like a big ol’ roasted turkey leg and I’m good! Luckily for me and other not so adventurous eaters there’s the Three Broomsticks for just such a feast.

The Three Broomsticks is located in Hogsmeade across from the Owl Post and within a short walk over to Hogwarts Castle. We were greeted by a friendly staff member and seated right away.

The restaurant/pub was busy both times we visited. On one visit we split the Shepherd’s Pie, the next time I had the smoked turkey leg and chips (fries) and Nicki had fish and chips. The pie was a bit smaller than I normally get at McNamara’s Irish Pub & Restaurant in Nashville, TN (my favorite Irish pub) or when Nicki makes it at home, but it and a bottled water did hit the spot. The turkey leg on the other hand was HUGE!

The interior was filled with antlers or all shapes and sizes, over-sized chandeliers, and lots of wood. It looked like it had all been made out of heavy timbers, stone, and iron many, many years ago. The detail kept me looking around the room as we ate and rested our feet. If it wasn’t for the tourists in shorts or the electric muggle cash-registers it would totally feel like an old English pub and inn.

“The Three Broomsticks and I go way back, further than I care to admit. I can remember when it was One Broomstick!“—Horace Slughorn joking with Harry Potter.

Towards the back of the pub was Hog’s Head – an actual bar, and behind the bar was an animatronic hog head which would occasionally snort at the bar patrons. In the books it is owned by Aberforth Dumbledore – brother of Albus Dumbledore. Here you could order more adult beverages like a variety of domestic and imported beers, specialty drinks, wine, spirits and mixed drinks. Didn’t check to see if they served Firewhisky or not, but Nicki had a bad experience with some concocted by a friend one Halloween so we have tried to forget about that night. I do wish we would have remembered to pick up a Hog’s Head mug for our bar at home. I’m getting old and forgetful. Could have used a Remembrall on this trip!

Now when it came to washing down those meals, you had a few choices any fan of the Harry Potter world will be familiar with- Gilly Water and Pumpkin Juice. They were available at many stands around the park.

I really liked this stand in Diagon Alley across from the Gringotts Money Exchange. It had different magical creatures on each of its corners.

But the most well known of the beverages served at the park is Butterbeer! I’m here to tell ya- it’s good stuff.

Butterbeer comes in two different types- regular or frozen. You can get it in a souvenir mug for a few dollars more, or disposable plastic cup if you want to save some money and/or don’t want to carry the mug around the park with you.

We had our first taste of it at the Leaky Cauldron which is near the entrance to Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley, but you can get it in several locations around both parks.

Nicki and I both preferred the regular Butterbeer‘s butterscotch and cream soda taste to the frozen one’s sweeter taste, which reminded me of a slushy ice cream birthday cake. Good, but not as smooth or refreshing as the other- and reeeeeeaaaallllly sweet. Not sure which one J. K. Rowling prefers.

We did notice that there were at least two different styles of Butterbeer plastic collector mugs, and at least one other glass version you could purchase at Wiseacre’s Wizarding Equipment. I meant to pick up a glass one on our way out of the park but again I forgot. We did take home two different plastic mugs.

Butterbeer is known to have a slight alcoholic content and be served warm, but the ones severed in the park were non-alcoholic and chilled.

Sirius Black looks like he could use an alcoholic version- or maybe he’s had one too many!

There’s one shop that specializes in selling mostly Butterbeer and we tried some there, too. They had some beer-beer on tap as well.

Now, if you can’t make it to Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley, you can whip up a batch of this brew at home. Here are some recipes from Orlando Informer  and Food Network. Going to have to try and make some myself, but will stay away from making any homemade Firewhisky!

Oh, if you do have a sweet tooth there are a couple places to try- but when it comes to a great selection of candy you have to stop by Honeydukes sweet shop in Hogsmeade. Chocolate Cauldrons, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, Chocolate Frogs and more can be purchased at the shop. Nicki bought a couple Chocolate Frogs from Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes (Fred and George’s shop in Diagon Alley) before we left. They each came with a Salazar Slytherin card. Figures…

One place we didn’t try in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter was Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour in Diagon Alley. It was an ice cream shop across the street from Ollivander’s and Gringotts Bank. With all the Butterbeer I drank that week I had to stay away from the ice cream there. Whenever I did pass by I could see through the windows that it was always packed with customers. I made up for it when we got home and visited our favorite ice cream shop- area 51 in Hernando, MS!  Florean Fortescue’s also serves continental breakfast items and pastries in the morning hours, along with bottled Pumpkin Juice, teas and water.

“What did you expect? …Pumpkin juice!?“—Madam Pomfrey after Harry Potter spat out the Skele-Gro.

DSC_1796 DSC_1797

One thing I wish had been available to purchase was a bottle of Skele-Gro potion. I didn’t want to drink it, but the bottle was just too cool! The display was pretty neat, too- as the man in the window drank from the glowing Skele-Gro bottle above him his broken arm mended itself. “1100 drops. Bone Regenerator. Bone-fide results every time.”

I meant to ask if they sold any at the park- perhaps at Borgin and Burkes. Will have to check for sure while shopping on our next trip or check online. If they don’t sell them, they are really missing out- especially around Halloween!

Next blog we’ll board the Hogwarts Express!

See you at Platform 9¾…if you can find it!
