Con Ettiquette and the Art of Portfolio Reviews Part 3

I’ve talked about portfolio reviews before (Part 1 and Part 2), but recently had a con experience I thought I’d share.

msc_smt2016

A couple weeks ago my wife and I were guests at MidSouthCon in Memphis, TN. It’s a sci-fi/lit con in its 34th year and one of our “backyard cons”. We go every year.

msc_bvspanel2016

msc_wwpanel2016

Saturday we were both on a lot of panels so I didn’t get a lot of time to check out the dealers room or visit other panels. When I did get a chance to do a quick run through the dealers room to get a comic book signed by Comic Artist Guest of Honor Bob McLeod he wasn’t at his table. “Probably at a panel.” I thought.

msc_jokerpanel2016

MSC loves their panels, and sure enough as I entered a room to be on one he was walking out from one he had been on. My panel was about to start and I didn’t have a lot of time, so I figured I’d catch up with him later. By the time we were done with all of our panels, the dealers room and art show were closed for the night. We met up with some friends and headed across the street for dinner, and then called it a night. It was getting late, and even though it’s a backyard con, we still had about a 45min drive home to do.

msc_artshow2016

The next day Nicki only had one panel, so we were able to spend more time around the con. We swung through the art show (I had some sketchcovers on display in it), ran into a few friends, and bought some cool merch in the dealers room.

msc_dealersroom2016

I saw Bob McLeod sitting behind his table and talking to a con attendee. It was kinda funny, because as I approached the table I could hear the fan mentioning Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich, the “Missouri Mafia“, and a “great guy” who runs a con in Cape Girardeau, MO. “Ken Murphy and Cape-Con, right?” I asked. “Yeah!”, he replied. I told him I had been to Cape Comic Con many times before and enjoyed it- and I had even met Roy and Gary there as well. He then told Bob he would pass along his info to Ken and thanked him for the business card.

image1

As they finished pleasantries, I was standing there waiting my turn and about to say, “Hi, Bob- good to see you again. Would you mind signing this comic for a friend of mine?” Unfortunately I didn’t get to because just as the fan turned to leave another artist, who’s table was a few down from Bob’s, comes running over and plops his portfolio down in front of Bob. “THUD!” He opens the book, tells Bob, “Here’s my portfolio I was telling you about!”, and starts pointing out some of his favorite works, some of which aren’t quite finished yet and most are pin-ups.

Bob sits forward and looks over the pages as the owner of the portfolio tells him about each page, and in detail…quite a lot of detail.

I started to get upset- “WTF..?!” I was standing there with a book in one hand and $20 in my other to buy a couple prints. I didn’t think I was invisible, but this guy was treating me as such. As rude as his cutting in front of me, a paying customer, to monopolize Bob’s time (for free professional advice) was, the more I listened to the exchange the more I was glad he did jump ahead in line.

Anytime Bob would give the guy a compliment, the artist would thank him and tell him more about the story. Anytime Bob would give him some advice or constructive criticism the artist would either make excuses, would say, “Oh, yeah- I knew that.”, or just flat out say that he thought about doing it that way but thought his own way worked better.

Internally I was shaking my head. He was committing just about every convention portfolio “no-no” an aspiring artist can. I normally feel sorry for the artists when I witness them doing something like this- when a pro gives them any criticism they immediately go into defense mode. Usually they are too young, inexperienced, nervous, excited, or just plain socially awkward. This guy was old enough to know better. He was one of those folks who didn’t really want advice, and would probably forget any given. He just wanted someone to tell him how good he is. He had mentioned how another local artist had given him some great advice and really loved his work.

While I listened, I flipped through Bob’s portfolio of art prints for sale and made mental notes of the tips he was sharing. How to use line weight to show lighting and depth, when and where to use cross-hatching and shading, and when not to. When he looked at one of the few sequential pages in front of him- a couple long horizontal panels on top with three long vertical panels along the bottom, he told the artist that he would have brought the two figures off of the bottom of the panel borders. The figures were standing at the very bottom of the frames. The artist said he would have, but had planned on doing a big lighting effect above them. Bob explained how by moving them up even slightly to separate them from the panel border it would create more depth. The artist again said he would have, but this time added he needed to leave room for a lot of dialogue. Bob suggested that he draw out word balloons to see how much space he would have for the figures/heads. It’s how Bob likes to do his layouts- Charles Schultz did his Peanuts cartoons that way, too. Instead of the artist thanking him and saying he’d go home and re-draw that page, he kinda blew Bob off..!

When there was a break in the conversation, I asked Bob how he had done a certain inking technique on one of his prints. It was a sepia tone western shot with a lot of cool crosshatching that reminded me a lot of Bernie Wrightson‘s work. He laughed and said, “I don’t know- I just sort of make it up as I go along.” He then told me how he just tried to think of where his light source is and then draw thick to thin towards the light. It was a simple bit of advice, but he pointed out how and where the light was coming from, and it quickly made sense.

Bob noticed I had a book and cash on my hands, so he told the artist, “I think he was here first- do you mind if I take a moment?” The artist replied back, “Oh, yeah- sure. Lin and I have been on panels before together, and we always take them over. Ha-ha!” For the record I only remember being on one panel together, but they do tend to blur together after a while, and I suffer from “old timers” a lot these days.

Bob asked me if I’d like my book signed. I said yes, and that I’d like a color Phantom print and a Spiderman B/W cover print as well. He signed them, and we both thanked each other. I really hated I didn’t get to talk shop more about techniques and the Spider-Man books he’s worked on. Since Nicki and I needed to head out so I could get home and work on a sketch card deadline, I said goodbye and met up with Nicki. Another MSC was over, and this one seemed to really fly by.

So to review, here were a lot of the “no-no” things the aspiring comic book artist was guilty of:

  • Don’t push your way in front of others, especially paying customers. Be polite, respectful, and wait your turn.
  • Try to find out before the con if they are going to be reviewing portfolios. If you are uncertain, you can always ask if they would mind looking at your work. Some pros are very happy to, others may be too busy. Just be polite, and dress like you are going to an interview if it is a company looking to recruit talent. Just because it may be at a con doesn’t mean you should dress like you’re at a con. Oh, and be sure to bathe, brush your teeth, and use deodorant. You’ll both be glad you did.
  • Don’t show a professional a bunch of pin-ups and art you haven’t bothered to take the time to finish. It’s okay to have sketches and unfinished work in a sketch book- that’s what they are for, but not in a portfolio. Keep the work to 6-12 pages of your best and most recent work, preferably sequential comic pages. Pros want to see if you can tell a story, not if you can draw hot girls with big cleavage in “broke-back” poses or how you used to draw when you were “just starting out”. I do more illustration and advertising art and tend to keep about 10 pieces in my illustration portfolio. I can change it out depending on the client or person I’m showing it to. I know some artists have carried their work around in a FedEx box at conventions, and have been very successful with it. They could also draw their asses off. I personally like a portfolio because it’s easier for folks to flip through, it keeps the art organized, and can help protect it- which is very important traveling with it to/from and around a con. I like a zippered one, but the book style can be easier to flip through.
  • Listen to the advice and constructive criticism. Don’t make excuses, argue, or tell them that you knew that information already. You don’t have to like it or agree with it, but you asked for it so keep your mouth shut and take it. Answer them honestly when they ask you a question, and don’t be afraid to ask some yourself. Have a pad or sketchbook to make some notes, or at least act like you’re paying attention.
  • Thank them for their time. If they are selling merch or doing art and you can afford to buy something, do. They are there not only to meet fans, but to sell comics, sketches, prints, and more, too. Ask if they have a website or a Facebook page you can visit. If they have a business card or promo postcard available take one. Have one of your own ready in case they ask for one- especially for a talent search review. If you don’t have a website, get one, add a gallery, contact info, bio, and put your web address on all leave behind materials.
  • Learn how to do an “elevator pitch“. It’s a short, usually a short one line description of you comic/story. You don’t need to tell them or anyone who comes up to your booth the whole story. You want to give them just enough info to tease them and make them want to read it themselves. When I was working on “Bushi Tales” our elevator pitch was, “Four samurai girls go on a quest in a post-apocalyptic feudal Japan for the Japanese god of war, Hachiman.” Pretty easy to say and grasp the concept. If you’re showing a page of art you can give a brief description of the story or characters, but honestly if they can’t look at your work and tell what’s going on you’re probably doing it wrong.
  • If you are good at pencils, but not inks you probably should just show penciled pages. If you’re not a strong penciler get someone else’s penciled work to ink- let them know you want to be an inker, but don’t try to fool them into thinking you did all the work. If you’re not good with lettering or coloring and that’s not what you want to do in comics, don’t show it. Stick to what you are trying to get a job doing and only show your best work.
  • If you have any printed comics you’ve worked on bring along some copies. It gives a positive impression that you can and will do the work. After many years of being on the advice side of the table I am able to tell if someone is serious or a waste of my time in just a few minutes of talking to them. It’s gotten too easy some times. If someone is serious about learning I’m happy to talk shop at length. If I think they are full of it, I just cut through the crap. I tell them their stuff looks great, and wish them good luck- that’s what they wanted to hear anyway.

I’ve got a Part 4 coming up later, but hope this story helps you or someone you know with any portfolio reviews you may get to do. Again, Part 1 and Part 2 go into more details for tips on showing your work.

Thanks for reading all of this blog.  🙂

PS- I’ll be doing a blog post soon on the cosplay I saw at Midsouthcon.

Just A Hunka-Hunka-Hockey! Elvis Night With The Mississippi Riverkings

This past Friday, January 8th, would have been Elvis Presley’s 81st birthday.

944960_10208462250537721_233634709811225893_n

Last Saturday night my wife Nicki and I celebrated the King’s birthday a bit early with the Mississippi Riverkings at the Landers Center for Elvis Night! We’re both big Elvis fans so we were looking forward to enjoying some hockey and Elvis.

1457527_10208462273458294_2409845648562132435_n  734706_10208462276218363_5662726013458461024_n

We got some great seats center ice, but as we sat down we noticed that below us Elvis was already in the penalty box!

1655962_10208462429942206_263762122771118383_n

Actually it was Elvis Tribute Artist Hal Hall waiting to go on the ice to sing the national anthem.

During the intermissions between periods he posed for pics at the Riverkings table. Hate I didn’t bring my Elvis glasses or cape!

156253_10208462677668399_929788398899786811_n

I did wear my custom Jor-Elvis Geeky Jersey, though. 😉

1918276_10208462763550546_5379472931161148957_n  12400712_10208462422022008_3460639142313503464_n

The Riverkings were wearing custom hockey jerseys, too. It’s tradition for them to wear Elvis themed sweaters to celebrate the King’s birthday. They auctioned off the jerseys after the game to benefit the RiverKings ReachOut Fund at the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi. The auction raised $9,550! We saw several fans wearing different ones from previous years, and I have to say that this year’s looked pretty sweet! I really dug the colors and choice of the Elvis photo used. Wouldn’t mind seeing a third team jersey using that slate blue/grey with gold, black and white. It worked.
12400868_10208462497303890_2703003703060889498_n

The Riverkings drew first blood against the Louisiana IceGators early in the first period when Linden Bahm took a Leo Thomas pass to make it 1-0 Kings!

10580035_10208462590466219_8740667486670065979_n

Shortly after, IceGator goalie Adam Courchaine was injured by a shot to the jaw/face mask early in the first period. Courchaine hit the ice hard and we didn’t see any movement from him for at least a minute or more! Once the medical staff got him on a stretcher and were moving him off the ice the fans and players all cheered for him. Some players approached and offered well wishes as the downed goalie passed center ice. I hadn’t seen anything that scary there since years ago when a player went headfirst into the boards at the Zamboni entrance side of the rink. I love seeing hard hits and slap-shots, but hate seeing anyone have to leave the ice injured. This can be a very dangerous sport and hockey players are a special breed!

Going into the first intermission the Riverkings still had the lead at 1-0, but it unfortunately wouldn’t last.

1919523_10208463027237138_8713051455496692939_n

During the intermissions Riverkings mascot Riverthing was on hand to handle his game break duties like the Puck Toss…

246722_10208463027757151_3722869640305174281_n

…or Human Bowling.

1933729_10208463027357141_1337334616635230591_n

Thing had helpers, but was missing his absent buddy Sheldon the turtle who was let go this season.

12400529_10208463027597147_6313045715652940319_n  10685457_10205931722076091_2525692630748244482_n

I don’t know why Sheldon was officially let go, but they also did drop the green from their color scheme and go back to the original black and gold of old with their new logo. For long time fans like me, after 14 years of seeing Sheldon it was like having a longtime friend move away, or a fun co-worker get laid off. Sucks…

CSCyaNvVAAAIpx7

I had worked with the Memphis Riverkings on merchandise back in the late ’90s. When they were looking to change logos, the marketing guy at the time wanted to get rid of our favorite furry mascot. It shocked me a bit since he was such a fan favorite and anyTHING with Riverthing on it always sold great- especially merchandise for kids. (I encountered a similar situation with a local radio station and them getting rid of a great selling lizard mascot.)

rvrkngzamboni

Things change (no pun intended) and I didn’t have a hockey player in that fight. The team had been at the Mid-South Coliseum for eight seasons since it’s first season 1992 (original Riverkings head coach was Steve Carlson aka Steve Hanson/The Hanson Brothers in the movie Slap Shot). The Coliseum had seen better days and the team desperately needed a change of address, and a shot in the arm.

Gew0dukza7h4d0u3ow9bceb51

In 2000 the Memphis Riverkings moved south to the DeSoto Civic Center/DCC (later renamed the Landers Center) and revealed their new look. Nobody was sure of why they went with a turtle, but in time he grew on us. (There had been a Memphis Turtles baseball team in town back in 1909-11.)

w78y2ehffj2gudzcfr0yqpjfi

In 2007 they changed their name to the Mississippi Riverkings and tweaked the logo- which made it look cleaner and the turtle more aggressive. In 2011 the team went from the Central Hockey League/CHL to the Southern Professional Hockey League/SPHL.

188776_1919178383079_7588423_n  199264_1919178223075_3957590_n

Thankfully for the fans they ended up keeping both mascots after moving to Mississippi from Memphis. I’m afraid looking at their website (and store) recently makes me think Riverthing just doesn’t get much love these days. Other than a few news mentions and a toon in the Kids’ Club section on the team’s site, and some plush Riverthings in the gift shop– like Sheldon, he’s kind of missing, too.

10383083_10205890992737883_5250331822921175134_n

I think some teams just don’t utilize their mascots or their likenesses very well when it comes to merchandising and promotions. I love collecting mascot merch and have got several Riverthing, Sheldon, Grizz, Rocky, Gnash, and others in my collection.

188429_1919101661161_7134968_n

I’ve been lucky enough to run into them all in person at games and special events, but Riverthing and Sheldon seemed to be the most accessible for fans. They seemed to always be present at charity events, local holiday parades, and schools.

190493_1919105621260_4256051_n

The two were the devilish dynamic duo of the Landers Center and were all over the place causing mischief during the game on ice, in the stands, behind the bench, or while exuberantly greeting fans out in the halls or at the arena’s entrances.

1510417_10205891400188069_1288859258955468713_n  10955340_10206040624158575_8518388988016568983_n

At one time Riverthing used to jump barrels while on skates during intermissions- that’s crazy!

B7mRvQrCEAAje5X  CBJg5PfU0AAHLbv

It was always fun to run into the hockey tag team and a highlight of the games for me when they’d come up, shake my hand, and pose for a pic.

195869_1919102141173_243364_n

200568_1919104101222_4875566_n

Makes my day, and I feel like a kid when I see mascots in person, but especially these two.

188645_1919200103622_1982792_n  73669_1697292316066_8032874_n

I like the new logo and a return to the original team colors. I have even bought new team merch. That doesn’t mean I have to like all of the changes or miss the way things were.

IMG_8233

I know re-branding happens, teams relocate, team roster changes occur, staff (and mascots) come and go, and that at least we still have a mascot.

196069_1919199623610_1011922_n

I’m just going to miss seeing the two of them together at games. 🙁

10369743_10208463116399367_472057759784290152_n

Well, back to the game…it got ugly for the Riverkings after that first intermission and the Gators owned the next two periods.

1923196_10208463133679799_1891491149093161794_n

Louisiana rallied and scored 5 unanswered goals, while back-up goalie Brad Barone was able to stop all 24 shots the Kings sent his way. The IceGators went on to win the game 5-1.

“Star Wars: The Fanboy Stays Awake” – And Spoiler Free To See “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”!

Dec27
by Lin on December 27, 2015 at 2:49 pm
Posted In: Blog

Last Friday night I got to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens on its opening weekend, and was not only able to stay spoiler free before seeing the movie, but was able to stay awake though the newest Star Wars movie. Both were big accomplishments for me. Let me explain…

IMG_9696

I first got to see Star Wars: A New Hope (or just “Star Wars” as we called it back then) when I was around 11 years old in 1977. I went to this latest movie at 49 years old. The 11 year old me had no idea what to expect going into see Star Wars, while the 49 year old me had all sorts of expectations- as well as an internet to avoid spoilers on the week before the movie officially opened. Gotta admit, just like watching the original trilogy(OT), or prequels, or Special Editions, the 11 year old in me comes out every time I see these movies on the big screen. When the Star Wars logo first appears in front of me followed by “the crawl“, well- it’s time-traveling and real movie magic for me. Ah, but the 11 year old me didn’t have a day job and was used to staying up late to watch movies. Sadly the 49 year old me just can’t hang like that anymore. Last week my wife did a Star Wars movie marathon at our house showing each of the previous 6 films, and I fell asleep during the last three we watched at night. It’s not that I find them boring- I love the OT, but due to my day job I’m up around 5:30am or earlier each morning and in bed by 10pm. If I’m sitting on the couch I can easily be out by 8 or 9pm, and I just can’t stay awake for midnight showings at the theater anymore. So when my wife Nicki said she got tickets for a 9pm showing on a workday for us, I just didn’t know if I could go do dinner, make it through the movie, go hang out with friends after, and then drive home. I can happily report, that while the movie did test the abilities of my bladder towards the end (I bought large sodas for us), The Force Awakens did keep my attention and keep me awake.

FullSizeRender (14)

Friday afternoon when I got off work I met Nicki across town at the Malco Cordova movie theater to drop off my car, pick up our tickets she had ordered online, and then go grab some dinner before meeting back at the theater to get in line with some friends. Our waiter at Red Robin noticed our Rogue Squadron Geeky Jerseys and asked if we had seen the The Force Awakens yet. He said he really dug it and promised not to spoil anything for us.

IMG_9684

After dinner we had a good hour or more to kill before securing a place in line at the theater, so we headed up the street to the Wolfchase Galleria Mall to kill some time and do a bit of last minute Christmas shopping.

IMG_9680

I have been looking for a plain embroidered Star Wars logo ball cap for a while now and have only found a beanie style hat. The baseball ones are usually printed all over and are pretty obnoxious. Didn’t see any at Hot Topic or the Disney Store, but did find a cute stuffed BB-8 at the Disney store. Nicki unfortunately got a free Star Wars spoiler when she picked up a toy lightsaber there! Later while shopping at FYE Nicki noticed some Rebel Alliance hats that matched our Geeky Jerseys perfectly…and even better- they were on sale! I bought a pair and we headed back out into the mall.

IMG_9714

I spotted Santa downstairs and since the line wasn’t long we went to have our photo taken with the big guy. I told him I wanted a Red Ryder BB gun, and he told me, “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid.” 😉

FullSizeRender (15)

Back at the theater we were shocked that it was very quiet, and that the lobby was a bit empty. One or two folks were standing at the concession stand and nobody was in line. One of the ticket window guys asked us about our Geeky Jerseys as we walked in. We asked if the 9pm showing had begun seating yet, and the ticket taker told us no, but we could start a line to the right. “Wait…we’re the first ones in line for Star Wars..?!!!” Apparently so, which meant we were going to get great seats. 🙂

IMG_9694

A few minutes later our friends Mike and Rhonda, Tim and Traci, and their kids Emma and Rachel started showing up and joined us in line. We all had some catching up to do since we hadn’t gotten together since around Halloween.

smtvaderpostcard300dpi450

We’re all members of the Memphis Fan Force/Suspicious Mind Trick, a local Star Wars fan club. It’s actually how Nicki and I met and got together.

btsheardsm

I told this story last time, but thanks to George Lucas I lucked out and have a Star Wars fangirl wife, because Nicki and I actually got together due to our love of Star Wars.

quigontim  jeditrace

I met some local Star Wars fans (Tim and Traci) from the SMT group at the 2003 Midsouthcon costume contest and we traded jokes and comments on some of the costumes we saw. The couple were dressed convincingly as Jedi and each had a great sense of humor.

IMG_3433

After cracking each other up at the contest, Tim handed me a promo SMT pen as I was leaving the convention, and they invited me out to a backyard drive-in showing of Star Wars at their house, which led to an invite by them and Rhonda to a group outing at a Memphis Redbirds game, which led to me joining the group.

dorkvader  obigyn

Then a few years later while living in Nashville, TN Nicki met some of the same folks on the internet at the TheForce.net message boards after doing an online search for news about “Revenge of the Sith” and Darth Vader. They invited her to join us at one of our Fan Force activities whenever she was coming back home to visit family or going to a convention like Celebration, ConNooga, or Midsouthcon.

She did on several occasions and became part of the tribe. We became friends and started dating after Nicki moved back here. Later we got married with Tim as my Best Man and Traci as Nicki’s Matron of Honor. Several other SMT members were in attendance. We both went to the same high school, but didn’t get to know each other until almost 20 years or more after we both had graduated. She was worth the wait. 😉

IMG_9709  IMG_9707

My wife and I are both fans of Star Wars, but Nicki’s a HUGE Star Wars fan and a big Darth Vader fangirl! She loves the expanded universe books, Marvel and Dark Horse comics, and has collected many toys, art, autographs, statues- and of course copies of the movies and soundtracks.

IMG_0104

We’ve done a few displays at the Hernando Library (hockey, comics, Batman, and Harry Potter) and one was items from our combined Star Wars collections. It was to help promote Dan Wallace‘s book signing there, which also included some costumed members of the 501st and SMT for the event.

IMG_9700

We’ve both have been lucky enough to meet many of the actors from the Star Wars movies and animation, and many of the authors and artists on the novels and comic books. One of those authors joined us Friday night to see Star Wars– the other “JJ“…John Jackson Miller.

IMG_9665

JJM is a former Memphian and a long time friend who we also met through Midsouthcon. He was in town to visit family and had some time to join us. Always good to see and talk to John, and not just about Star Wars. We all went for something to eat/drink after the movie and I enjoyed talking story and trivia with him. The guy is a walking data bank of movies, comics, and TV trivia. He knows sales figures, release dates, spin-offs, etc. Nicki said it’s like he ate TV Guides and Trivial Pursuit games as a kid and can regurgitate that info at will. Honestly I’m really surprised his head hasn’t exploded yet.

IMG_9670  IMG_9677

John and I, along with some other Memphian Star Wars artists, cosplayers, and fans were interviewed in this past week’s GO MEMPHIS section of the Commercial Appeal and Memphis Flyer. (You can read those stories by clicking the links below.) Lots of Star Wars love in our area.

IMG_9692

So, what did I think of Star Wars: The Force Awakens..? Well, without any spoilers I can honestly say I enjoyed it and thought it was a fun movie. Was it my favorite Star Wars movie..? No. Was it perfect..? For me, no- but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t or won’t be for others. At times it felt very much like a Star Wars movie, and at other times it didn’t. Some things were great homages or familiar, other things just seemed like a bit of a re-hash, “borrowed”, and not very original to me. I felt a few actors/characters weren’t on screen enough, one character was a bit over the top, and some of the plot I just didn’t get. May have to read the novelization to fill in some blanks for me. Nicki’s read it and has already clued me in on some things I wasn’t sure about.

bb8_lin

IMG_9679 IMG_9678

The movie did have a good mix of drama/humor/action, and I did love a lot of the character designs. Captain Phasma and BB-8 are two of my favorite, and I love drawing them. I’ve got to say that the visuals were just stunning in the movie, and I want the art book and visual guide book. Can’t wait to go back and see the movie again in the theater just to see what all I missed going on in the background, and honestly wouldn’t mind catching it once in 3D, too. Which leads me to what this movie did best– it made me not only stay awake during a late showing (a monumental task), but made me want to go see it again, and again, and again. It made me care about new characters- especially Rey, who I’m really looking forward to seeing more of in the next movie(s).

riverkingsstarwars

It successfully passed the torch- or should I say “lightsaber“, to a new generation of actors and fans.

bb8watch

Edit to my post: had time to see another showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Christmas Eve after I got off work.

2ndviewing

Nicki and I enjoyed the movie more after a second viewing. Some things still bothered me a bit, others not so much anymore, and a few things did make more sense. I did catch several things I missed the first time I saw it last week, including R2-KT, some reactions by background characters and one main character, more info during a “flashback” scene, and saw more aliens. Still want to go see it on a BIG screen in 3D. I don’t see many 3D movies, but think this one would definitely be worth it!

starwars_presents

Oh, and I did get the art book and visual guide for Christmas, plus several other SW items including my new BB-8 watch, Hot Wheels cars, Clone Wars DVDs, and a LEGO TIE-fighter. We also enjoyed going shopping for Nicki’s nephews Tyler and Beckett and buying them Star Wars clothes and a lightsaber- red, of course. 😉

A couple days ago in an city not too far away…actually it was this past Friday in Memphis, TN– my wife Nicki and I traveled to the FedEx Forum for Star Wars Night when the Memphis Grizzlies took on the evil Charlotte Hornets.

riverkingsstarwars

We got to attend the Mississippi Riverkings Star Wars Night last year, but missed the one last weekend so we definitely wanted to make it to the Grizzlies’ one this week.

crystalball2012

If I ever meet George Lucas I’ll have to thank him for my wife, because Nicki and I actually got together thanks to Star Wars. True story…

elvadercolrgbsm

I met some local Star Wars fans from the Memphis Star Wars Fan Force/Suspicious Mind Trick (SMT) fan group at the 2003 Midsouthcon costume contest (I did the El Vader art above as a promo image later for the group), and was invited to join them at a backyard drive-in movie night to see Star Wars on a huge 20’x20′ movie screen. That lead to another invite for a group outing to a Memphis Redbirds game and me becoming a member of the group (I also joined the Rebel Legion as Obi G-Y-N once I had a Jedi outfit). A couple years later while living in Nashville Nicki met some of the same folks online at the TheForce.net message boards. They invited her to join us at one of the Fan Force get togethers (game nights, cook outs, backyard movie nights, conventions, etc.) whenever she was coming back to Memphis to visit family. Nicki joined the group, we hit it off, and started dating after she got a new job and moved back here. Several of our dates have involved going to Star Wars related events like movies, concerts, exhibits, cons, book signings, charity events, and more. We even named two of our cats after Star Wars characters (Zayne and Jarael) from our friend John Jackson Miller‘s comic series Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
1964890_10203488198349525_1715318160_n

We are both fans of Star Wars, but my wife is a HUGE Star Wars fan and has an impressive collection of the expanded universe books, Marvel and Dark Horse comics, toys, art, autographs, statues- and of course the movies (she’s actually in the other room right now watching the prequels). We’ve done a few displays at the Hernando Library, and one of them was items from our combined Star Wars collections in-conjunction with Dan Wallace‘s book signing there. The displays were fun and a big hit, and there were some of the local 501st Legion and SMT on hand for the book signing.

12369255_10208299096618975_1346994183775849877_n  12341195_10208299096258966_8482640469764808783_n

For the #GrizzStarWarsNight there were also a good number of the 501st‘s Midsouth Garrison and Mississippi Rancor Raiders members on hand for photo ops with the crowds of fans- or “trooping” as they call making an appearance while in costume.

12341618_10208299097058986_8353307297626136631_n

Why wasn’t TK-421 at his post again,,? Because he was at the Grizzlies game, too!

12346367_10208298822572124_6714007244220241652_n  12345667_10208299096498972_6811780457341617588_n

We took advantage of the chance for a couple photo ops and saw some familiar faces (Kell as Leia), and masks (Kevin as Vader)! Was great to run into a few of the 501st members we know. We also got to sit next to two of our SMT friends, Mike and Rhonda. It was at Rhonda’s old apartment for an SMT game night where I first met Nicki.
12360003_10208304626397216_2589247601910110619_n

We grabbed some snacks and found our seats. I always dig the opening of the Grizzlies games- it’s extremely loud and flashy!
12376117_10208304626877228_4645459138052010020_n  12348072_10208304627397241_6211759780331499457_n

Mascots Natch (a Southern black bear who was the mascot of the Memphis Turtles baseball team, was kept chained to a tree in Overton Park, and was one of the reasons to start the Memphis Zoo) and Grizz were dressed as Vader and Chewie, and the Grizz Girls were all dressed as Princess Leia– classic Leia, not Slave Leia. 😉

12391291_10208304627117234_4905604311771656284_n

There were a lot of Star Wars skits with the two mascots including a “Duel of the Fates” light saber battle, a medal ceremony Flavor Flav would have been proud of, and a lot of Star Wars music between play. Even Super-Grizz made an appearance.

12316279_10208299113739403_8698942151490893389_n  12299376_10208299114339418_8408977520308103935_n

The Grizz Girls, Grizz Claw Crew (dressed as Rebel pilots), and Kings of the Court Dunk Team (dressed as Elvis) kept the crowd cheering and entertained throughout the game.

12310655_10208304627237237_2371909695582974178_n  12342421_10208304626557220_1170411066866756621_n

Natch and Grizz shot tees out into the crowd using their “Death Star Tee Shooter“, and the first 3000 fans got blue #FirstTeamAllJedi robes. We arrived a bit too late to get one. 🙁

12360328_10208305888228761_1355894834100824972_n

That wouldn’t be the only disappointment of the night I’m afraid. Although Memphis took a quick 10+ lead and kept it through most of the first period (35-29), something happened in the second and they started shooting like stormtroopers and couldn’t hit anything! Before we knew it Charlotte had not only caught up, but had taken the lead (54-59 end of 2nd and 73-93 end of 3rd). Final score was Memphis 99, Charlotte 123! Yep, that “stung“.

12316398_10208299802996634_625782797424999022_n  12316604_10208304627797251_1730153312653181221_n

After the game we headed back down Beale Street towards where our car was parked. It was a nice night to stroll down it and hear the live music coming from the clubs that line the historic street. If wasn’t packed, but had a pretty good crowd for this time of year. The weather was unseasonably warm for December, but much like the Memphis Grizzlies, Memphis weather is very unpredictable.

lin_bb8

Less than a week away is the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I got to see Episode IV: A New Hope (or just “Star Wars” as we called it back in 1977) at the Whitehaven Twin Cinema near Graceland. After that opening fanfare, crawl, and space battle I was hooked! Saw Empire at the Park Theater, and Jedi at the Mall of Memphis. All three theaters are now gone, but I did get to see the first one again at the Whitehaven Cinema before it closed when they did a 10th anniversary release. As a kid (and adult) I collected all the toys and comics I could! I don’t know what to expect from the new movie, but I dig BB-8, Captain Phasma, and the new order stormtroopers and have been blown away by some of the space battles I’ve seen. I’m just hoping the 11 year old in me is happy with the next chapter in the Star Wars story (I had mixed feelings about the prequels). I’ll do a review and talk about our adventure at the movies next week.

Cleveland Rocks, And Memphis Has The Blues, But Hernando SKATES!

skateparkopening

Last month on Saturday, October 10– after four years of hard work by Edward Pidgeon and Chad Crawford with Hernando Skates, folks in Hernando, Mississippi got to skate in a brand new skatepark- ‘Pidgeon Park‘.

DSC_2871sm

The two were able to raise $40,000 in about four years, which allowed Hernando Parks and Recreation to apply for a state grant for $100,000.00 to make building the park possible. The skatepark was built by Portland, Oregon based Evergreen Skateparks.

DSC_3024sm

My wife Nicki and I got to check out the grand opening. There was live music, door prizes, and some amazing skateboarding going on by all ages.

DSC_2671sm  DSC_3027sm

There isn’t a permanent sign up to tell you where to turn yet- you have to keep an eye out for the dirt road once you pass Conger Park, and the skatepark is off the road a bit.

DSC_2908sm

DSC_2922sm

Not only were there a lot of folks out skating the park, but there were some serious mad skating skills going on. Lots of air!

DSC_2673sm

I had no idea that skateboarding was as popular as it is around here. We’ve had “The Darwin Gang” who are some kids/teens who live down the street from us skate up and down our block, but those were the only only skateboarders I’ve seen around town. I’ve only really seen skaters in mid-town Memphis in this area.

DSC_2893

There was a new park built down the street from my apartments when I was a kid in Bartlett, TN (suburb of Memphis), but closed soon after it opened due to drainage problems. Instead of a skatepark it became a swimming pool for mosquitoes. I never got to check it out.

DSC_3031sm  DSC_2972

This park is set up to where newer skaters and more experienced skaters can both enjoy it. (That’s my lil’ buddy Zee from Area 51 Ice Cream on the right.)

DSC_2900sm

DSC_2818sm

We saw kids, teens, adults, guys, girls, black, white, newbies, long time skaters- diversity of all kinds all skating together and having a great time. A lot of spectators like me were on hand as well.

12219414_10208134935195042_2085567676331032033_n

A couple weekends ago I got to see what it’s like to actually skate it. I (49yrs) met my friends Kevin Thorn (51yrs), Greg Cravens (50yrs) and son Gideon, and Mike Womack and his son Noah, at Coleman’s Bar-B-Que in town for breakfast early on Saturday morning.

11924255_10208134935355046_6968508500986364644_n

We gobbled our food down quickly and headed down Commerce Street to 51 and down to the park which was about 5 minutes or so away.

10352741_10203902637030233_4564778001754027629_n

The park is off Highway 51 about a mile south of the DeSoto County courthouse in the center of Hernando, MS (about 15min south of Memphis) and just around the corner from the old watertower, Conger Park, and neighborhood where Nicki and I live. The irony of my living between a skatepark and a cemetery was not lost on me, nor was the Hospital Wing helicopter flying overhead.

IMG_8959

It was a bit chilly that morning, but a gorgeous day and we had the whole park to ourselves for a few hours.

IMG_9006

Apparently the skater community around here sleeps in late on Saturdays. That was great for us!

12235104_10208134933314995_3144933874709027943_n  12208404_10208134933795007_2261812662743121503_n

The guys were all impressed with the park! Greg and Gideon skate a lot up in Memphis and have been itching to check out this new park. They all started to devise a plan of attack.

12249949_10208134933995012_2636138859589568080_n  12227107_10208134933154991_5627505177523640821_n

Greg’s a cartoonist and does a webcomic strip called “Hubris“. He’s also a uni-cyclist, kayaker, and outdoors kinda crazy guy. We’ve known each other for over 30 years now.

10389988_10203903045280439_7981632868575735744_n

His Hubris stickers have been showing up all over the world these days. Keep your eye out for them.

11037155_10208134956875584_5752052665928642249_n

Me, well- it’s been about 35 years since I’ve been on a skateboard, other than doing some straight aways with my nieces and nephew about 10 years ago. The skateboard on the right is my original board from back in the ’70s. The one on the left is the loaner board Greg let me use for the day. To say boards have changed over the years is an understatement.

12249786_10208134076213568_650860679109381513_n  IMG_9044

My first time out was a wipe out! No major injuries- I was wearing wrist guards and hockey pads and luckily my spill looked a lot worse than it felt. Even so I still felt it through the elbow pad on my left arm, but better that than my drawing arm being shattered. I didn’t use any pads or wear a helmet as a kid- it just wasn’t as available or advanced then.

DSC_3029

I don’t know why anyone these days would skate on concrete without some sort of protective gear- at least a helmet!

lin_helmet nicki_helmet

I always wear wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, and a helmet when ice skating or roller skating, too. I’ve got medical insurance, but can’t afford to be out of work due to broken bones or a concussion. I grew up with road rashes, but never tried to do any stunts on my board…well, no intentional ones. Usually I just rode it down hills in parking lots at our apartments, or down the street at my grandparents’ house. The only time I tried to jump a curb I ended up flipping over on my back and had the wind knocked out of me. Didn’t try that move again.

12105801_10208134933635003_2640785780972887550_n

After my wipe-out this time I got back on the board and pretty much just stayed in the “shallow end” or “kiddie pool” part of the park for the rest of the morning. I was bad about wanting to stand up straight on my board instead of bending my knees and lowering my center of gravity. Like Greg says, “Gravity is a downer!” Lesson learned.

12249849_10208134921074689_6031025850976399518_n  IMG_8967

We offered Kevin some extra elbow pads but he declined…until he wiped out in about the same spot I did! He put on the pads and continued skating, occasionally playing “follow the leader” with Greg. Mike decided to watch from the top of the park. Again, I stayed in the shallow end. My wife is constantly having to tell me I don’t bounce or heal like I used to.

IMG_9011  IMG_9012

It was a bit intimidating to me at first than I thought it would be. I mean, c’mon- I saw kids skating it a few weeks earlier. How hard could it be, right? Straight skating was fun, but anytime I got near a bowl or started up a side it freaked me out. The sides and bowls of the park seemed a lot deeper and steeper once inside it.

12227832_10208134935075039_742084829321286584_n

Gideon, Greg, Kevin, and Noah were exploring as much of the surface area they could and doing great. The park looked smaller from the pics I had seen, but once you’re inside it there’s lots of room to maneuver and do tricks.

12208385_10208134934275019_4455483821100512054_n

12027796_10208134921994712_344214925441256537_n

Look at the Old Farts Club go! Not bad for a couple of old geezers. Mike finally tried it and wiped out in the same place Kevin and I did.

IMG_9027

Finally around 10am or so we had some company show up. They seemed like they knew what they were doing so we let them have the park to themselves.

12243124_10208135079798657_4587588396512291200_n

When I got home from the skatepark I assessed the damage to my knee. I ended up just walking away with a flesh wound- much like the road rash I encountered when I was a kid. Greg and Gideon made the trek back down the next morning. I slept in and nursed my scraped knee and aching bones. My wife made fun of me walking around like an arthritic orangutan…again. Getting old sucks, but i do look forward to giving the skatepark another shot.
