This past July 18th and 19th my wife Nicki and I took a trip to “Rocket City” and attended Con Kasterborous- a Doctor Who convention in Huntsville, AL.

DSC_1096  DSC_1185

This was our second ConK– we attended last year and had a great time. Saw a lot of familiar faces this year, but was amazed at how many first time ConK attendees we talked to, as well as con-newbies in general. If you’re first con is this one, it’s not a bad way to get introduced to the convention experience.

DSC_0945

I was set up in Artists Alley again for the weekend, but had a much better spot this year. I was set up directly across the hall from the main viewing room and the main panel room for the Q&As and celebrity photo ops. Great traffic and chance to people watch.

11057224_10207341373196488_5907070027146948515_n

This also made it very convenient for Nicki to attend events at the con when she wasn’t being my booth babe.

11760054_10207347271103932_8234108039228120346_n

She got to take several shots of the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as some of the Q&A panels. I watched and listened from the doorway some. I could keep an eye on my table from there.

This is a shot Nicki took of artist Kelly Yates presenting actor Paul McGann with some of his 8th Doctor art. Paul played the Doctor in the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie, and again in 2013 for “The Night of the Doctor“. He’s also provided the voice of the Doctor for several other Dr. Who animation and audio projects.

paul_nicki_tardis  mcgann8x10

I got to briefly talk to him when I went upstairs on Sunday to get a signed photo of him as the Doctor, but Nicki actually got to do the photo op with him Saturday. Very nice gentleman.

DSC_1035

Actor Eric Roberts was also presented with Doctor Who art by Kelly Yates. Eric played “The Master” in the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie opposite Paul McGann. I most remember Eric from “Star 80“, but he was also in one of my favorite movies “The Dark Knight“. He’s the only actor to play a villain in the Doctor Who and Batman franchises, and the only American actor to play The Master.

DSC_1083

Eric’s wife Eliza Roberts was a guest as well. She played Miranda, Bruce/The Master’s wife in the Doctor Who TV movie. One of her first acting gigs was the movie “Animal House“- another one of my favorites! (Check out the”Fawn Leibowitz” and “Do you mind if we dance with your dates?” scenes.)

In addition to great guests, the cosplay at ConK2015 was excellent again this year, and was everywhere.

Lots of great villains, creatures, and aliens from the series…

…as well as plenty of people “playing Doctor”. 😉

There were even some Doctor mash-ups!

Theses guys kept “photo-bombing” everyone.

This was one of my favorite costumes of the con- Professor River Song from the episode “Silence in the Library”. I really dug that the helmet lit up!

I had just started sketching this Vashta Nerada sketch when I spotted her.

There were some non-Who characters at the con- this R2-D2 was rolling up and down the halls, and this “Game of Thrones” Hodor/Bran Stark cosplay was brilliant!

Everyone was having a great time either getting into character or taking pics with the cosplayers or TARDIS– or dressing up like a TARDIS or Dalek.

Lady Cassandra looked to be smiling as well during her visit to ConK2015.

Even the Daleks seemed to be having a good time at Con Kasterborous, and one was a ring bearer at a wedding!

Okay- this little Weeping Angel seemed to be crying A LOT and was upset ALL weekend, but I think she was the only one WHO wasn’t having a good time.

11705151_10207352315790046_1763258934902348602_n

On Sunday I got to get out from behind my table and do a bit of shopping around the con in Artists Alley and the vendor room upstairs. Not sure how traffic was for the vendors, it was a bit slow when I slid by. They were a bit out of the way from the rest of the con activities, but were next to the celebrity room where I got to meet Paul McGann.
11745316_10207352315470038_6488456551512311623_n  DSC_1171

I picked up Nicki a 4th Doctor Eaglemoss figurine…

11745407_10207350637868099_6861386668847697364_n  16151_10207352312269958_1147809067255553054_n

…picked up a Bat-Brew cup and some steampunk goggles for me…
IMG_6127  IMG_6128
…and some cool Doctor Who plastic crafts and some buttons for my TARDIS lanyard. Nicki got a great handmade stuffed 10th Doctor from the vendor she bought her stuffed Adipose from last year.

11209572_10207354403122228_6689312358834787895_n  11141193_10207347402747223_7199632339639392940_n

But we didn’t have a great time just while we were at the con, there was a lot to do after hours, too. There was a great outdoor mall that the hotel is located in- the Bridge Street Town Centre. One of the best places for walking to/around at a con location I’ve experienced. We had dinner there a couple nights, and enjoyed sitting and listening to live street musicians while sitting on the patio at Lime Fresh Mexican Grill or walking around the mall.

10983167_10207347317185084_7619032467261726502_n  11742899_10207347319625145_8800285942145282156_n

One of our favorite after con treats were the frozen fruit bars from Steel City Pops. It was a bit warm Saturday night and these hit the spot after dinner. There was a movie theater and a few other shops and restaurants we’d like to hit on our next trip to Huntsville. Even if the con has to cap attendance in the future, I do hope they get to stay here at the Westin and Bridge Street Town Centre a few more years. Nice hotel and it’s got great food, shopping, movie theater, train, waterways/fountains, and is just a few minutes from the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

Since we were staying at my in-laws’ house in Scottsboro, AL that weekend (it’s about a 30-45 minute drive to Huntsville) we stopped by the Unclaimed Baggage Center on Monday after the con. They had a cool “Labyrinth” display in the front lobby area, complete with full sized Hoggle. I picked up some clothes for a War Doctor costume I’ve been wanting to work on. Will be wearing it to ConK2016 for sure! If you are looking for clothes for any of the Doctor Who Doctors (especially 10 or 11), or just about any costume this place is a great place to hit.

11217545_10207358830352906_6337924067024021275_n

Before leaving town we wanted to stop by Nerdtopia which is just a few blocks away on the court square/town center in Scottsboro, but they were closed on Mondays. Will have to try to come back on a Friday or weekend.

11742830_10207336558636127_8307122195643854092_n

On our way in on Friday we did get to stop and have lunch at the Below The Radar Brewhouse in downtown Huntsville.

11742825_10207336431552950_6847892214458662826_n  10473620_10207336735800556_8191936300674141951_n

The food was delicious- Nicki got the Fish and Chips and I got a burger with kettle chips. Nicki also enjoyed one of the ciders they offer. Will be back to eat/drink here again. I’m not a big fan of fish, but after trying a bite of Nicki’s lunch I’m going to have to get it next trip. The white bread bun, potato chips, and Sprite elevated my blood sugar a bit, but man was it worth it!

11541926_10207336244548275_2071594809062519868_n  11403417_10207338471323943_1983356518393525760_n

We also hit The Deep Comics while we were in Hunstville. I picked up a 4th Doctor POP! Vinyl Figure for Nicki, plus a Harley Quinn magnet, couple of Mickey Mouse sketchcovers, and a “Batula” storybook. Nicki picked up a POP! Adipose. Later at the Walmart in Scottboro, AL we found Nicki a Hot Wheels Black Widow car- score!
11755714_10207338604087262_9179883196764577046_n

Speaking of “scoring at a Walmart“, it wouldn’t be a Friday Night Date Night for Nicki and me without one of our regular trips to “The Walmart“. We hit the one in Scottsboro for con snacks to enjoy at our table over the weekend, after catching a showing of the new “Minions” movie at the theater just up the street.

11012996_10207337718985135_6694626780511269527_n

Usually  we get a dose of “birth control” (what we call screaming kids) at Walmart, but this time we got it from the kid next to us at the theater. Luckily the dad finally took the kid outside. I expected to have kids laughing and having a good time, but not the screaming we and the rest of the audience endured from that 2-3yr old kid. A 7:30pm showing was probably not a good idea by her parents, and when they arrived in the middle of the trailers and the kid didn’t see Minions on screen the hysteria began..! We had decided to pass on an opening weekend showing of “Ant-Man“, but caught it the following weekend. We thought since the Minions movie had been out for a week it would be less attended. We were wrong, as the theater continued fill up even through the trailers- cue couple with upset kid. We enjoyed both movies, although the “Ant-Man” viewing was much quieter and more enjoyable.;)

IMG_6089

In spite of our screaming kids encounters in Alabama, we are really looking forward to getting back to Con Kasterborous and Huntsville next summer. Young Amelia Pond/Caitlin Blackwood will be back as a Guest of Honor for ConK2016. We’re also hoping to hit another Doctor Who con- ConGT, in Clarksville, TN next year. We missed the first one last year due to a scheduling conflict with a local con here.

Oh, and don’t forget that Doctor Who returns this fall- and in some places like Huntsville and Little Rock he will be back in 3D!

The Adventures of Lex- My Metropolis Superman Celebration Rescue Kitty

10922652_10207071854138680_1261602305773483829_n

This is my new little buddy Lex.
statue1

He and 2 siblings were found abandoned at the carnival in Metropolis, IL after the annual  Superman Celebration this June.

11406811_10207071862338885_7752517445679748569_n

Thankfully all kitties were adopted- and I was lucky enough to take Lex home with me.
11053473_10207082284879442_7443920091476809504_n

I had gone up to Metropolis to hang out and help out my friend Tim Brown with the film festival he was running during the weekend long  Superman Celebration (I’ll have a full HGWT blog or two about this year’s celebration soon). When we stopped by Creations The Florist to say goodbye to the celebration’s two co-chairs, Lisa Gower and Karla Ogle, I got to meet Lex- who was unnamed at the time. Wasn’t sure if he was a “Lois” or a “Clark“. 😉

11536070_10207071863138905_474936599570125143_n

As soon as I held him he climbed up to my shoulders and rubbed his head against my chin whiskers. After he curled up in my arms I knew I had to make the call to my wife Nicki about adding him to our family. He looks so much like our first kitty Zayne, who passed away a few years ago from FIP, and is about the same age and size as he was when we adopted him. After texting Nicki a few shots of the little one she agreed to let me bring him home with me.
11401091_10207071862538890_1798735047793617319_n

Lisa and Karla gave me a cat-carrier with a litter box and some food for the road trip back to Mississippi. After a stop at the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce and a few quick pics at the Superman statue in Superman Square we headed out. He had been fairly quite until we were leaving the city limits. After I came to a straight stretch of road I let him out and again he climbed up to my shoulders, and rode like that for quite a while.

11401233_10207071902739895_7750846413423018520_n

Tim and I stopped by Lambert’s Cafe in Sikeston, MO on the way back home. It’s a tradition to eat there either before or after the celebration weekend. Tim had called earlier to see if it was okay to bring the kitty with us, and they said they would keep an eye on him for us in their office. About an hour or so later when we got there I hated to wake Lex up- he was snoring a bit. As I got off the interstate he had climbed down into my lap and was out! Didn’t take him long to do the same after we left the restaurant and got back on I-55.
20017_10207101983411893_8884776589557459318_n

Nicki warmed up to him right away, and he to her! He seemed to like to sleep in her arms as much as he had mine. He had a bit of eye-gunk, and was obviously a bit malnourished and possibly dehydrated. Nicki agreed to take him to the vet the next morning to get him checked out before we introduced him to our other cats- Harley Quinn (white face, black mask, and crazy) and Jarael (she and Zayne were named after characters from the “Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic” comic by our friend John Jackson Miller).

11429728_10207073486979500_1556322910120436781_n

Lex only weighed 1.3lbs at his first visit and you could easily feel his ribs, but seemed to be in good health otherwise. The vet gave him some gel for his eyes (which worked wonders!), some preventative worming meds to be safe, and said to bring him back in a week for his first shots. He also confirmed that our kitty was a “Clark”, and told my wife that we were going to have our hands full. Boy was he right! That’s when Nicki thought of calling him “Lex“, and it stuck.

10438315_10207133028948012_5511627040625492527_n

He is a handful, but is a \S/uper little guy, though. We decided to keep him in the “Fortress of Solitude” (also known as the master bathroom) for a few days until he had gotten his shots, and the girls had gotten theirs updated, too.

10402809_10207215656973661_8039588263945789136_n

We also wanted to get their claws trimmed just in case their first encounters didn’t go so well. Were afraid they might not think he’s as cute as we- and he think he is.

11659423_10207196036723167_8463409509233423912_n

We would let him hang out in my Batcave studio while I drew, and my wife’s Fangirl office while she played video games when out of the master bath. He an the other cats would sniff and paw at each other under the doorways.

11014746_10207101569441544_1537946826933945572_n

Occasionally one of the girls would hiss. For the most part he just seemed to like to hang out, explore, eat, and attack our feet.

11665491_10207186264678872_1004922560383934709_n

The next week we loaded up all three cats into my Batmobile and headed around the corner to the County Seat Animal Hospital to see Dr. Pattberg. The girls like our vet, but aren’t so thrilled about riding in the car. Lex didn’t seem to mind.
11659300_10207186009912503_7898308173736000984_n
Everything went well at the vet’s office, and we learned that Lex had become twice the man (almost) that he was a week ago- up to 2.1lbs! Harley is still our heavyweight weighing in at 18lbs, and Jarael is our middleweight at around 12lbs. Once everyone had their shots and the girls got their nails did, we took them home and later picked up Lex a new collar and name tag. I was hoping for a Superman collar, or even a purple or green one but no luck. Nicki jokingly pointed out a camouflaged collar. I told her, “No- I haven’t been living in Mississippi THAT long…yet!” Got him a grey/navy/white striped one, but will look for a more geekish one.
11063536_10207090340680832_190448294979008665_n
The time finally came to formally introduce everyone. The girls just weren’t really sure what to make of this tiny fast furry ball of energy, and kept their distance mostly. A warning hiss here and there was heard whenever he would get too close and maybe a quick swat of a paw, but nothing too physical. I was really proud of our two girls.

11703035_10207196035923147_6962172411782362839_n

Jarael seemed to warm up to him the quickest. She and Zayne were both adopted at the same time and were very close. She took it very hard when he passed away and her personality changed a lot after his death.

11709539_10207215581651778_4298321706336375118_n

This boy does take his life in his own paws sometimes with his drive by sneak attacks, but she’s been pretty good about putting up with her new little brother’s high-jinx…and there’s a lot to put up with!
11015301_10207215457488674_3087368196553905173_n
Harley Quinn on the other hand, wasn’t so quick to bond. She’s very territorial, and has been known to hiss at other cats she sees outside. Jarael has a quick left and a mean right so Harley tends to keep her attitude in check around her older adopted sister. With Lex she tried to keep her distance and would sniff places he had been. Only rarely would she get close enough to smell him or let him smell her, and a hiss usually followed.

10424293_10207215283924335_5851060466747059455_n

Even so, she slowly got closer and closer to him. She and Jarael started playing chase with Lex throughout the house, and they’d take turns trying to scare each other. I even caught Harley and Lex playing patty-cake on the kitchen floor the other night.

11206130_10207197075709141_3919671796268188616_n

He’s really made himself at home here with us, and even takes cat-naps behind me on the couch, or will curl up in bed with us to snuggle at night.
11692541_10207215245323370_7238936753813624969_n

He’s super-lovey when not attacking our feet or his new siblings. I didn’t think we’d ever have a third cat in the house, but can’t imagine it now without him. It’s definitely the most exercise I’ve seen the girls do around here for quite a while!

11070417_10207165986651934_3719015534664640964_n

He’s extremely fast and acrobatic, but not very graceful. Good thing he’s cute! Now if we could just get him to get a job to help out with the additional food and litter costs..!

11201935_10207087365566456_7654527710238453147_n

Welcome to Mississppi, Lex- hope you like living here with us!

One week ago- #FreeComicBookDay

If you didn’t get to one of your local comic shops last Saturday, you missed out on one of the greatest geek holidays since Halloween– Free Comic Book Day.

fcbd
What is Free Comic Book Day? It varies from shop to shop, but pretty much it’s a day (first Saturday in May) when you can walk into your local comic book shop and get free comics. How cool is that..?!!

DSC_8575

This year’s selection was another fine group of comics to choose from- some comics are geared towards kids, some are more “grown up”, and some are all ages friendly.

11205509_10206714518445511_1225928301282406112_n

Some of my favorites from the ones I picked up (above) were Gronk, The Phantom, and Doctor Who.

IMG_2054

This year Nicki and I started off Free Comic Book Day a day early on Friday night. I got off work early so I did some shopping at Target (a copy of Cosplay Culture Magazine and a couple of Batman and Robin wind-up toys).

IMG_2051

We then met up for dinner at Corky’s BBQ and then caught a 7:00pm showing of Avengers: Age of Ultron at the Olive Branch Malco.

IMG_2053  photo (66)

We really enjoyed it, and I picked up Nicki a Captain America and Black Widow cup topper- her two favorite Avengers. One of the first FCBDs I remember was seeing a Spiderman movie the same day. That was awesome, and glad we got to catch another superhero movie again.

The next morning we got up early, hit Starbucks for a quick breakfast, and headed into Memphis to make our first FCBD stop at Comics & Collectibles. The shop opened early this year (6:00am), but we didn’t get there until around 9:30am- 30min before their normal Saturday morning opening time.

DSC_8587

Last year there was a looooong line at the door, but this year since they had opened earlier folks were already inside shopping when we got there. They added an extra cash register for the day, and had extra staff on hand to help out with the crowds. I got my freebies, picked out my purchases, and hopped in line. I was happy that the line moved fairly quickly, and it gave me a chance to walk around and enjoy the event.

Several folks came out in costume…

We ran into several friends like Carlin Stuart from MidSouthCon, and a couple of my Mid-South Cartoonists Association buddies Mr. J himself- Chris Jowers, and Ghostbuster/Muley The Mule Kevin Williams.

There was a constant flow of folks buying comics- which is great, since the comics aren’t free for the retailers. They purchase the comics from Diamond (the comics distributor which actually has a warehouse here in Memphis) and then give them and other promo items out to customers. Each shop has different rules on how many comics you can get for free, or which comics are available. It’s been a hugely successful event each year.

Nicki and I both dropped some coin at the shop. I needed a couple more short boxes to store my blank sketch cover comics in, and picked up a Frank Cho art book, a Rocketeer/Spirit hardcover trade, some Avengers Mystery Mini Figures, a Batman: Arkham Knight Harley Quinn and a birthday present for Nicki. 😉
DSC_8688

We hopped back in the car and headed across town to Comic Cellar out in the Raleigh/Bartlett area- which is the birthplace of my wife’s blog Fangirl Wednesday.

DSC_8679

We were greeted by another MSCA buddy Lonnie Easterling and his kids when we arrived.

DSC_8687

There were also two local artists- John “Vampyr” Martin and Larry Paul Cathey, who were set up doing sketches and selling comics and sketch cards at the front of the store.

DSC_8680

Nicki and I had a great time digging through the long boxes of discounted trades and hardbacks.

DSC_8686

We both ended up getting a few each, along with some of our monthly single issues- including a couple new blank sketch covers to work on.

DSC_8690  DSC_8683

I picked up a couple new Eaglemoss Batmobilia Batmobiles while I was there, and apparently my wife turned into the “goddamn Batman“!

IMG_2065

Once we left Comic Cellar, we headed out toward Arlington to Bricks & Minifigs– a Lego store that recently opened up in the Memphis area.

IMG_2063

IMG_2064

I picked up a few mini-figs for us (couple Minions, an Oracle/Barbara Gordon, Scarlet Witch, a Beetle, and a pair of black legs for a Batman figure I already had). Saw several more I wanted including some Jokers, Batman, and Robin. There was also a LARGE Batmobile that I reeeeeaalllly wanted!

IMG_2068

After shopping for Lego stuffs, we grabbed a quick snack and drinks and drove back towards Memphis/Cordova to the Wolfchase Mall to kill some time before catching up with some friends for lunch. We went into Hot Topic, Spencer’s, fye, and the Disney Store. I tried to find some kind of Black Widow merch for Nicki at the Disney Store, but the only thing I could find was an Avengers: Age of Ultron gift bag! For shame… #WheresNatasha

IMG_2072 IMG_2074
Did see more super-women featured at Spencer’s and fye. I picked up a cool “Evolution of Batman” bat-logo pint glass at Spencer’s.

We met up with our friends at Red Robin for lunch, then jumped back in the “Black Widow” to head up the road to see Avengers: Age of Ultron for a second time that weekend. Picked up an Avengers popcorn tin and a cup with Hulk topper. Again, we both enjoyed the movie- and I think I dug it more a second time. Nicki wasn’t crazy about the Bruce/Natasha relationship and a line she says to him in the movie about being “monsters“. We both felt the relationship was a bit rushed, and that some of the fighting scenes could have been trimmed a bit to flesh the characters out more. I was also disappointed that Falcon didn’t show up in a big rescue scene towards the end of the movie. We both did agree that James Spader rocked as Ultron, and that the Vision was awesome! After the movie we headed up the street to the Flying Saucer for after movie drinks and pretzels with our friends, then called it a night.

“Smiling Is Not Consent” – Con Cosplay Courtesies

Apr15

spideyhulk

In my last HGWT blog post I discussed my being a “closet cosplayer“. I’ve loved wearing costumes, making costumes, and meeting costumed characters since I was a kid. Even though I’m almost 50 now, I still feel like I kid when I do.

DSC_0732

Nothing like seeing costumed characters- especially old favorites I’ve know for years, to make me feel like I’m a 6yr old again. Superman, Popeye, Batman, Spiderman, Hulk- doesn’t matter. If it’s a cool character I’m diggin’ it.

IMG_8233

I especially get excited when I see costumed sports mascots at games- okay, maybe I get a bit too excited for a “grown man” my age. I don’t care if I know the “real person” inside the costume, or care how many times I’ve had my picture made with that character, if I get a chance for a photo-op with them I’m taking it…or having someone else take the pic for me!
linharlqbrucet150

If I’m at a con and can have my picture with a cosplayer, and the creator of that character I totally geek out. It’s even more awesome when we accidentally wear matching outfits! (That’s me at the SDCC with a Harley Quinn cosplayer and Harley Quinn co-creator Bruce Timm!)

harleylinsm

Have I mentioned I’m a big fan of Harley Quinn..? My wife even named one of our cats after her. (GPW‘s Tara Strand above is my favorite Harley cosplayer- she’s awesome!)

IMG_8685

Cosplayers come in all different sizes, shapes, races, ages, genres, experience levels, and sexes. Some have store bought costumes, some have made their own, some have hired a costumer, some shop at Goodwill, and others are given their costumes.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  IMG_8569

Some are just passionate fans like me. Some are hired to dress up and promote a movie, product, artist, or event.

IMG_5307 IMG_8296

IMG_5231

Some are funny, some sexy, some unique, some are one of your favorite childhood characters or from one of your favorite movies.

IMG_8287  IMG_0608

Some cosplayers are very young, and some cosplay fans are, too. (Artist George Perez is a HUGE cosplay fan- and very young at heart!)
DSC_1268SM
Sometimes you may not know who or what is inside a costume. It doesn’t really matter. It’s seeing that character in person that’s exciting, and cons are wall to wall with them!

IMG_8105  IMG_8232

You’d love to take their picture at an event, or have your picture made with them. What are some of the dos and don’ts of photographing cosplayers? It’s this that I want to focus on in this week’s blog, and the word that first comes to mind is…

cour·te·sy (ˈkərdəsē/)
noun
  1. the showing of politeness in one’s attitude and behavior toward others.
synonyms: politeness, courteousness, good manners, civility, respect, respectfulness; More
    • a polite speech or action, especially one required by convention.
      plural noun: courtesies
“the superficial courtesies of diplomatic exchanges”

l_a418cc5911e863ae9c4bbf7294bf3467  DSC_1134SM
I’ve heard some horror stories over the years from con goers, and have witnessed some really bad behavior at cons. Also ran across this article online- 7 Creepiest Things Said To The Cosplayers During Cosplaying! One of the remarks was, “Can I put my hand on your ass?” Uh, no..!

IMG_8360  IMG_8361

Let me start off by saying, “Smiling is not consent.” Just because they are dressed as a character doesn’t mean you can treat them as that character or act out of place because “they aren’t real“.

IMG_8018  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Just because they look over 21 doesn’t mean they aren’t 14 or 15 years old. I don’t care how sexy that cosplayer is dressed (or barely dressed) or how old they appear to look, it doesn’t give you the right to hit on or sexually harass them- which includes, but not limited to putting your hand in unwanted areas, groping, spanking, goosing, taking up-skirt shots, or expressing rude verbal comments.
sandiegosat3 009
And I’m not just talking about “booth babes“, slave Leias, or other scantily clad female cosplayers at comic book conventions or parties.

l_d01eb3547ac4e0baf1c5d43c976c51e4

This goes for costumed performers at amusement parks, sporting events, parades, etc. Be courteous. Use common sense. Say “please” and “thank you“. Act like you’ve had some kind of basic home training.

IMG_8274

Or as Star Trek/Big Bang Theory‘s Wil Wheaton has stated in Wheaton’s Law, “Don’t be a dick.”

thingmuleysheldon

I’ve seen people pull on the tails of costumes mascots and/or encourage their kids or drinking buddies to do it. Many times security or a handler will put a stop to bad behavior, but sometimes it’s more of a “hit on and run” type of situation- folks using a character’s lack of peripheral vision for an attack opportunity, and the large crowd around them to facilitate their clean get away. Basically they were being or teaching their kids how to be a dick.

Not being a dick and being courteous goes for celebs, too. As outgoing and friendly actor John Barrowman can be at cons and photo ops, even “Captain Jack” has a few conduct rules- although from what I’ve seen the man has no shame! S0, if Captain Jack has to be rude to you or call security on you…you’ve gone waaaaaaaay over the line!

IMG_0518

And sexual harassment and other bad behavior isn’t just a problem for the girls- although they have to deal with the majority of it. I’ve heard of guys getting groped, tuggin’ on Superman’s cape, and rude comments. Women, don’t be dicks, either.

60scatwomanlinsm  IMG_5273

If you see someone you’d like a picture of or with, compliment them on their costume and ask nicely to take a photo. “Hi, Catwoman- great costume! Do you mind if I take a photo of/with you?”

IMG_8272  IMG_8078

If they say yes, then act nice, keep your hands and boobs/ass compliments to yourself, and thank them- “Thank yuh very much!” If they say no, they are more than likely not being rude, just trying to get somewhere in the con. I’ve had folks tell me that they’re running late for a panel or trying to a big group photo shoot on time. Try to catch them later. If they ignore you they may not have heard you over the con noise. If you see a cosplayer stop for a group of people taking pics be quick and snap one yourself- just don’t get in anyone’s way or be rude. If people are wearing a costume they’re more than likely expecting to have their photo taken. Just be polite, be quick, and make sure your camera is on and the lens cap is off..! 😉

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  IMG_8659

One of the problems with wearing a costume is getting stopped frequently at cons to have your photo taking. It can be hard to shop, get across a con floor, make it to the restrooms, eat, talk to friends, etc. If you are going to cosplay at a con, I really recommend setting aside a couple hours of not being in costume. Some costumes can be hot or uncomfortable, and staying in them for too long can make your con experience unpleasant. If a con has an area for cosplayers to take a break (from photos, to re-hydrate, sit down, take off a helmet/character head, etc.) take advantage of it. You might meet other cosplayers and trade costuming tips or find out about other cons while taking a break. If you’re a con that doesn’t have one, look at adding one to your show.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Artists Alley/Writers Way in Metropolis during the Superman Celebration has become a popular spot for cosplayers to “chill” for a moment. It has the best A/C in town. Even if you’re not in costume, a cool place to rest, mingle, and shop can be a much needed oasis in southern Illinois during the middle of June. Also think about what type of weather conditions and the amount of walking you’ll be doing. Smart cosplaying and pacing yourself can make or break a con experience.
IMG_8365  IMG_8035

I also recommend tandem cosplaying. Go with a friend, spouse, group of friends or others in costume. There’s safety in numbers! Also, having a non-costume friend there with you as a handler (for costumes  that are hard to get in/out of or see well in), assistant to hold your stuff or take pics for you or a fan, or act as a bodyguard. People are less likely to get grabby or mouthy if they know you have back-up and are not alone.
funybonznicksm  DSC07233
I sometimes volunteer at a local charity haunted house. Many times I’m in my stilt-clown costume, and will walk around outside the haunt scaring some of the folks in line, doing photo ops, or waving in the parking lot at passing cars. Usually there are a couple different costumed scare crew members working the queue line crowds. We help watch each other’s backs, and there’s always at least one or two security members keeping an eye on the crowds. Many nights a local cop or two will stop by just to people watch. It can be hilarious to watch people exit the haunt. Unfortunately they can’t see everything or be everywhere. I was glad to have my wife keeping an eye on me and the crowds on more than a few occasions. Once, she overheard a group of young teens talking about kicking my legs out from under me. I couldn’t hear them because I was wearing an over the head mask, it was loud outside, and they were standing behind me. Nicki strongly discouraged the young punks against attempting to trip me, and they went on their way. She’s small but feisty! Another time I was running across the parking lot on my dry-wall stilts and felt one of my toe straps come loose. She heard me say, “Oh, shit!” and saw me limp to a stop. After helping me secure it back down I was up and running again…which she really hates to see me do.

lin3d

Speaking of the haunt, I’ve had several occasions where people just lose any self-control- either from alcohol, fear, adrenalin, or just trying to be a bad-ass in front of their friends. I’ve been hit one time, tripped up, had people run into a scene swinging their arms around threatening to hit anything that’s gonna jump out at them! We have security cameras, security people, and don’t like to have people act alone in scenes to try and keep our scare crew safe. Our general rule is no touching– by guests or crew. I’ve had scared victims- uh, visitors yell at me, “You can’t touch me! YOU CAN’T TOUCH ME!” My response it always, “I don’t have to touch you to kill you..!”

IMG_9767

We’re all volunteer actors trying to raise money for a charity. Paying $10 or more doesn’t give anyone the right to assault us. We can and will press charges. The first haunt I volunteered for was when I was around 8 years old. It was in the basement of a Mormon church in Utah. One of the first times I popped out from behind a fake tombstone as Dracula for my scare, I got punched in the face by a kid almost twice my size and age. Luckily one of the two older volunteers in the same hallway saw it and escorted him and his buddy out of the haunt.

DSC_1276SM

I’ve heard people excuse bad or “creepy” behavior on social awkwardness from being a geek/nerd. Saw someone on line blame Asperger syndrome for inappropriate behavior at cons. No- there’s a difference between having Asperger’s and being an asshat.

That same person stated this in that Facebook post:

This is the cherry-picking of cultural appropriation. You wanna get into “Nerd Chic”, you gotta also roll with “Nerd Creep”. It’s a package deal.  Put up with the drooling, the leering, the comments, and the frito-smelling feet just like we had to in our day, sweeties.

There’s a BIG difference between “keeping at arm’s length” and “gets online and calls them names, does whiteboard meme’s to ridicule them, and goes on campaigns to get them kicked out of their own dang conventions.”

Nerds were managing their own just fine. This campaign of conformity and censorship is nothing but bullying, and a side effect of the cultural appropriation of Geeks.

DSC_1113SM  DSC_1213SM

No, no, no…it’s called calling people out for not being able to behave in public. I wouldn’t put up with it at a sporting event, concert, haunted house- why would I have to roll with it at a con..?

DSC_1324SM

I’ve geeked-out over a pretty girl or cool celebrity- it happens. Have I ever thought, “Why did I say THAT..?!” or “Why didn’t I say ___?!” Sure, it happens. But I always try to make an attempt to behave like a civilized adult, or as we say in the south- someone who had a mother that raise ’em right!

IMG_8084  599815_4164355431102_47327997_n

Let’s teach the newbies coming into the cons- and some of the old farts who have either tolerated bad behavior or were guilty of it themselves, that this is not how it should be.

10949758_10206379070259516_186000968506632700_n  IMG_8074

Conventions should be a fun and safe place to attend and interact. Not a breeding ground for jerks, bullies, or sexual predators. I’m seeing more and more younger fans attending- some with their parents, some with friends, and some who just seemed to be dropped off at the con.

IMG_0541 IMG_0596

If you ever feel unsafe, please contact a con staff member or security. If your ‘Spidey-sense” is tingling, listen to it and get yourself out of that uncomfortable situation. Many artists and other pros and vendors at cons can be a safe haven for cosplayers in such situations. Many are fellow cosplayers and have been there themselves- like my friend Tess Fowler. Ask around if you’re unsure where to go.

DSC_9433

If you’re at a con Nicki and I are set up at feel free to stop by our booth. Will be more than happy to offer help if needed.

IMG_0413

Hope to see you this convention season- and don’t be afraid to let your geek-flag fly!

Confessions of a Closet Cosplayer

heroes150

Let’s start this blog by seeing what Wikipedia has to say about cosplay and related topics:

  • Cosplay (コスプレ, kosupure), a portmanteau (blend in linguistics- a combination of taking parts, but not all, of two or more words or their sounds, morphemes, and their meanings into a single new word) of the words costume play, is a performance art in which participants called cosplayers wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character or idea. The term “cosplay” is a Japanese portmanteau of the English terms costume, and role play. The term was coined by Nobuyuki Takahashi of Studio Hard  while attending the 1984 World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) in Los Angeles.  He was impressed by the hall and the costumed fans and reported on both in Japanese magazine My Anime. The coinage reflects a common Japanese method of abbreviation in which the first two moras of a pair of words are used to form an independent compound. ‘Costume’ becomes kosu (コス), and ‘play’ becomes pure (プレ).
  • Costumer may refer to: one that deals in or makes costumes.
  • Furry may refer to: The quality of being made of or covered in fur or  a member of the furry fandom.
  • Furry fandom is a subculture interested in fictional anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics. Examples of anthropomorphic attributes include exhibiting human intelligence and facial expressions, the ability to speak, walk on two legs, and wear clothes. Furry fandom is also used to refer to the community of people who gather on the Internet and at furry conventions.
  • A masquerade ball (or bal masqué) is an event which the participants attend in costume wearing a mask.

1379863_10202321270857067_1699774644_n

Okay- first thing I’m going to say is I’ve never considered myself a cosplayer, costumer, or a furry. Nothing against any or all- just never really thought of myself as any of the above. Until recently…

253905_2120446054645_6544777_n

Since I was a kid I loved Halloween. I remember being Fred Flintstone in a vinyl Ben Cooper costume. I loved making costumes and once made a knight costume in cub scouts by spray painting some long-johns silver and making a helmet out of an ice cream bucket and aluminum foil. I was Dracula a few times- once at a haunted house in the basement of a Mormon church in Utah, where I popped out from behind a tombstone and got punched by a frightened older kid. Growing up, even on days other than October 31st I loved dressing up as Spiderman- until one spider-leap from the couch tore the seat out of my plastic Ben Cooper Spidey costume (I did keep the box to store my comics in, until I got too many for it). I was constantly jumping my bike while pretending to be Evel Knievel in the driveway- well, until I forgot to put up the ramp and my dad backed over it in our car while running late for work one morning. Survived that- barely. Let’s see, I’m pretty sure running around with a towel around my neck like a superhero cape never ended up badly.

lin_workman_fly  07SupermanCelebration222

Okay- I admit that I occasionally still do that from time to time..!
IMG_7487
Once I was even part of the crowd who set a Guinness World Record for the most people dressed as Superman (that’s me in the hat on the far left between the balloons). Unfortunately the record was broken by another group, but that was still a blast to do.

I’ve dressed as a zombie cowboy (make up by my buddy A.G. Howard).

I’ve volunteered at a haunted house as an 8′ tall Killer Klown and have done SPFX make-up there and a zombie walk.

I’ve worn a Pooh costume in a Christmas parade and to the Ronald McDonald House for an egg hunt with the St. Jude kids (no- I wasn’t THAT Pooh at MSC a few years ago). I was LifeBlood‘s “Dot” at a FedEx plane pull with several other local mascots.

My wife even likes to dress up as some of her favorite fandoms like Doctor Who, Harry Potter, and Star Wars. We ended up meeting each other thanks to her doing an on-line search for Darth Vader and me making a bad Wampa joke at a con costume contest (long story).

So why did I never consider myself a “cosplayer“..? Have I been a “closet cosplayer“..? Maybe I am a “furry” and not just hairy..?!!

btsheardsm

I guess one reason was I didn’t think of myself as one is that I really didn’t understand what it meant to be a cosplayer. Maybe it had some weird stereotype I was subconsciously associating with it. I’ve heard the term used at conventions I’ve attended, but it mostly was at anime cons, or directed at “anime kids“. In the past 25 years of going to cons (10-15yrs on a regular basis) I would occasionally “dress up” in a costume, but always identified the term “cosplayer” with younger anime/manga fans. Maybe since I had been cosplaying since before it was called that I thought of it as something new. For over 45 years I had just been putting on a costume and acting like that character for fun. It didn’t really occur to me THAT is what cosplaying is!

gpwlin

It hasn’t been until the past 10 or so years that I even started really associating cosplay with anything other than “those anime kids“. I’ve run into professional quality costuming groups like California’s Gotham Public Works (above) at the San Diego Comic Con.

501stgroup4

The 501st Legion, Rebel Legion, Imperial/Republic Service Organization, Mandolarian Mercs, are Star Wars costuming groups I see at most cons that are now worldwide!

IMG_0590

Saw all of these Star Wars groups and a group of droid builders all set up in a 20’x20′ “Star Wars Pavillion” at the Phoenix Comic Con a few years back. “Impressive, most impressive..!”

Speaking of the Phoenix Comic Con, I’ve seen TONS of other AZ costuming groups there – including Arizona Avengers, and the Arizona Ghostbusters who have their own Ecto-1!

My favorite cosplayers to see at cons are families that costume together- I love it when parenting is done right!

Saw this Harry Potter family at the PHX con.

Little kids are the best, and I wish I could have gone to cons as a kid- or have costumes as cool as some of the ones I see at these shows.

My costuming highlight was Trick-r-treating each Halloween- and believe me, I counted down the days each year for the night I got to dress up and go door to door begging for candy. Don’t know why I didn’t think to wear a costume so I could ride my bike instead of walking!

Seeing people do a different gender costume- or gender bending/gender swapping, can be a great way to do a different take on a character. The costumes don’t have to be sexed up to be fun and interesting. Sometimes it works, other times not so much. Demyrie, the female Booster Gold cosplayer I met at the SDCC was amazing. She had a cool Skeets prop, and was fully clothed!

Some cosplayers have gotten some HUGE fan followings, become famous, and are in demand at cons as guests and photo ops. There has even been a show on SyFy called Heroes of Cosplay. I wasn’t a big fan of the “drama” that seemed to be manufactured for the “reality” show, but I was impressed with the costuming skills highlighted on the show. Just wish it would have focused more on the building of the amazing costumes, making something out of nothing, recycling/re-purposing items, the positive interaction with fans and other cosplayers, doing charity appearances in costume (which is what I thought the show was going to be more about when I first heard about it), and the folks who inspired or mentored them in costuming. That would have been a show I’d never miss an episode of.

It’s a blast to get surprised by cosplayers at con. I really get a kick out of seeing costumes that not everybody has done to death. Tinkerbell, Miss Piggy, Evel Knievel, Luke Cage, and Pac-Man..? C’mom, that’s cool- and not things you see at every con!

HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey was not one I ever expected! “Good morning, Dave.”

The Captain Chaos (from the movie Cannonball Run) we recently saw at Midsouthcon this year was another great surprise! “It’s a living!”

TRON-Guy was cool and unexpected, just didn’t expect to play “guess my religion” when meeting him. My friend Timmy always threatens to set up a booth at cons selling dance belts for male costumers. Have seen a bit too much of some Spiderman and Deadpool cosplayers..!

I’m afraid of just how many MORE Deadpool cosplayers will be at cons after the Ryan Reynolds movie comes out. Some of those folks take being “the Merc with a Mouth” a bit too far at times when getting into character.

Which brings me to another point- as a cosplayer do you just dress up as the character, or do you become that character? “Hey, there goes Elvis- YO’, KING!” I tend to try and be the character while in costume. I’ll only break character when around friends, or if I need to for some reason.

Nothing disappoints me more than seeing someone in costume not embracing being the character, at least know how to pose as that character, or having a few response lines as that character.  One year at Midsouthcon I ran into a Beetlejuice “cosplayer” and asked to take his pic. I use the quotes because even though he had a good store bought costume and wig, and the make-up was decent, he just had one pose (arms out), said, “Aaaahhh…”, and didn’t even make an attempt to do the voice. After I shot my photo and thanked him, my wife turned to me and said, “Oh-kaaay..!” I don’t expect to be “…dealing with a professional here!”, but I love becoming a character like Beetlejuice and seeing others do it (like the pro performer at Universal’s Beetlejuice’s Graveyard Review– who is AWESOME!). For me it’s a little disappointing when you see others, well- not.

The first time I dressed as Beetlejuice was at a Jaycees haunted house in Memphis (and that same year for a Rock103 Halloween party- above with Terri Grey/Elvira). I was there to sell tees and work the crowd. I had seen the movie maybe one, and had never seen the cartoon. I had some kids school me on the Ghost With The Most the first night! I found a copy of the movie on VHS (yes- it was THAT long ago), went home and not only watched that movie- but studied how he moved. I learned subtle- and not so subtle mannerisms. I also ditched the khaki pants and black/white flannel shirt one night for a borrowed striped suit which also made a big difference (Thanks, A.G.). When I returned the next weekend well prepared and looking more the part everyone got a kick out of it. One of the security guards let me use his bullhorn to announce the World Series score updates to the crowds in the queue line. I even freaked out a girl I went to elementary school when Beetlejuice knew her name. 😉

My current Beetlejuice costume was made by my sister LaDonna and is incredibly comfortable (the combat boots from Army Surplus- not so much). I was lucky to find the perfect striped material for it as Hancock’s Fabrics, and we used suit jacket and work out pants patterns to make it from. It being light and a bit loose really made a big difference in how I could act in it, especially that first haunt I hide the horn in my jacket pocket and can make it look like I’m honking my crotch. It’s always good for a laugh. I usually have to do a rush make-up job and my hair sometimes cooperates- or not , so I’ve never been totally happy with that par of it over the years. What sells me as the character is having a few extra props (Zagnut candy bar, fake bugs, severed ring finger, horn) in my pockets, memorizing some of the movie lines, being able to improvise as the character, and being able to do the Keaton movie voice and the cartoon laugh.

Now, as to being a “furry“- like my friend Kevin L. Williams and Muley the Mule once said sheepishly when asked if they were a furry- “Well- I’m moderately hairy…”

I’d love to do a Rocketeer, ’60s TV Batman, another zombie sheriff, and have plans to do at least one or two more Elvis inspired mash-up costumes in the future. Also debating on other costumes I can stilt-walk in…have a few ideas. 😉

Con season is in full swing so I hope to see you at one soon, and don’t forget that Free Comic Book Day is coming up Saturday, May 2nd! Wear a costume to your local comic shop- and take your spouse, friends, or kids, too. Something for everyone.
